Calcutta HC orders arrest of this IPL cricketer on rape charges, know who that player is

Calcutta High Court on Monday ordered the immediate arrest of cricketer Abhishek Porel and another accused. This order was given in connection with a criminal case registered on the complaint of a medical student, in which she was accused of rape, criminal intimidation and other serious crimes. Earlier in June, a woman had filed a police complaint against Bengal and Delhi Capitals wicketkeeper-batsman Abhishek Porel. The woman alleged that Porel had physical relations with her by falsely promising marriage and also assaulted and criminally threatened her.

Porel, who has previously toured the UK and Australia with the India A team, has completely rejected all the allegations. This complaint was lodged by the woman and her mother at Mogra police station in Hooghly district on Tuesday, after which the police said that they have started investigating the matter.

According to the complaint, the woman alleged that she and Porel were in a relationship for the last three years and differences arose between them last year, after which the cricketer allegedly started “distancing” from her. She also alleged that Porel had promised to marry her, but now he is not ready to do so.

In her complaint, the woman alleged that Porel had physical relations with her on the pretext of marriage and also accused him of assault and criminal threats. “We have received the complaint and have started investigation,” a police officer told PTI.

Porel, who is currently in Bengaluru, has termed these allegations as false. He also said that the police have not contacted him yet. Porel was quoted in the media as saying, “I am playing well right now, so all kinds of things are coming to light.”

The 23-year-old player said that he will respond in detail after the initial police investigation is completed. He said, “When the police investigate, I will talk about it. I have not talked to the police yet.”

Porel, a left-handed top-order batsman, is playing for Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League from 2023. Last season, he scored 108 runs in four innings for Delhi Capitals. He made his first-class debut for Bengal in the 2021-22 season and has played 32 first-class and 23 List-A matches so far.
