Can Stopping Sugar Cure Cancer: One of the most spread rumors on social media about cancer is that “sugar increases cancer” and if a person stops eating sugar or carbohydrates completely, the tumor will starve to death. For this reason, many families start removing rice, bread, fruits and other carbohydrate items from the patient’s diet. At first glance this seems correct, because cancer cells use a lot of glucose. But the real science is much more complicated than this.
Is this true or not?
Dr. Mandeep Singh Malhotra, Director of Surgical Oncology and Robotic Surgery, CK Birla Hospital, New Delhi, calls this thinking a dangerous half truth. He says that a part of science is correct, but people draw wrong conclusions from it. Proper nutrition in cancer does not mean starving the body, but keeping it strong enough to withstand the treatment and maintain immunity.

What is the sugar and cancer theory?
In fact, the theory of sugar and cancer started in 1924, when German scientist Otto Warburg discovered that cancer cells use glucose faster than normal cells. This was called the Warburg effect. Even today, positron emission tomography-computed tomography scans work on the same principle, because tumors absorb glucose rapidly and begin to glow in the scan. Research by the US National Cancer Institute also shows that cancer cells change the way they use energy.
What are the disadvantages of stopping carbohydrates?
But one important thing that is often not mentioned on social media is that not only cancer cells, but also the brain, heart, muscles, blood cells and immune system need glucose. If a person stops carbohydrates completely, then the body starts producing glucose itself. This process is called gluconeogenesis. For this the body breaks down muscles and proteins. That means the cancer keeps getting energy, but the patient starts becoming weak.
What things should be kept in mind during treatment?
Doctors do not say that eating unlimited sugar is right. Refined sugar, cold drinks, candy, pastries and highly processed foods are harmful for health. But during treatment the body needs a balanced diet. Experts recommend eating whole grains, pulses, vegetables, nuts, healthy fats and protein items, so that the body gradually gets energy and remains strong.
