The second phase of voting will take place in West Bengal on 29th April i.e. today. Just a day before this, the Election Commission transferred a prominent local official Saurav Hazra. Raised after protests, political rhetoric and complaints amid the Falta dispute gaining momentum in South 24 Parganas district. Action has been taken against him for not cooperating with IPS Ajay Pal Sharma.
Responsibility given to Ramya Bhattacharya
Falta’s Giant BDO Saurabh Hazra has been immediately transferred to Purulia headquarters. A notification regarding this was issued on Tuesday (April 28), in which Ramya Bhattacharya, an officer posted on special duty, has been appointed in his place.
Hazra was also working as the Assistant Returning Officer of Falta Assembly seat. The Commission approved his transfer and directed to implement the order immediately. This action has come at a time when Falta seat has become a sensitive center following the visit of an Election Commission observer, protests by Trinamool Congress supporters and complaints alleging misbehavior by central forces before voting.
How did the controversy start?
The controversy started when a video of Uttar Pradesh cadre IPS officer Ajay Pal Sharma, posted as an observer of the Election Commission in West Bengal, went viral, in which he was seen visiting the residence of Trinamool Congress candidate Jahangir Khan late on Monday night. In the video, Sharma warned that strict action would be taken against any attempt to intimidate voters.
