Ethanol as Kitchen Fuel: Amidst global uncertainties, there is now talk of considering ethanol as an alternative to LPG cylinders. This means that after blending with petrol, ethanol can also be used as kitchen fuel in future.
Ethanol manufacturing companies say that amidst the rising prices of LPG and interruptions in its supply, it can also be adopted as kitchen fuel. In this sequence, government oil companies have also started preparations to launch ethanol as the best cooking fuel and stoves running on it in the market under the Green Energy Policy of the Central Government. It is being told that companies like Indian Oil (IOCL), Bharat Gas (BPCL) and Hindustan Petroleum (HPCL) are now working rapidly on this project.
Why the emphasis on use of ethanol?
Ethanol production is increasing rapidly in the country. Its most special thing is that it is produced mainly from sugarcane juice, maize and spoiled or rotten grains. In such a situation, it will be much cheaper than imported LPG. Anyway, India is a country which imports more than 60% of its LPG requirement from abroad. Its payment puts pressure on the country’s government treasury.
Meanwhile, Saudi Aramco, the world’s largest oil company, has also increased the contract price of LPG for June by 1% to 3%. In such a situation, if the focus is on using ethanol as kitchen fuel, then its price will be much lower.
Ethanol burning stoves will be cleaner and more environmentally friendly than coal or wood burning stoves because it will reduce both smoke and pollution. Like LPG, there will be no fear of gas leaking or cylinder bursting.
In which countries is ethanol being used as kitchen fuel?
There are many countries in Africa and Asia where ethanol is already being used as kitchen fuel. These include African countries like Kenya, Ethiopia, Ghana, Tanzania, Madagascar and Mozambique, where ethanol is used extensively in everything from hospitals to hostels and community kitchens. Apart from these, it is also being used as kitchen fuel in Asian countries like Philippines, Thailand and Latin American countries like Brazil and Haiti.
