Cockroach Janata Party i.e. CJP. This name was a joke and a reply to CJI Surya Kant’s statement about ‘cockroaches’. Now this joke has become the biggest question of Indian politics. What was once dismissed as ‘cockroaches’, has today become ‘cockroach’ and has become so widespread that it is difficult to ignore it. Now there is only one question in everyone’s mind that if CJP becomes a real political party, So whose base will it eat and what are the chances of this happening…
If CJP comes into politics, whose votes will it cut?
There can be 3 big targets after CJP enters politics…
1. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP): ‘Same anti-establishment, new generation’
CJP is being compared with AAP first. This comparison is not meaningless. AAP was born in 2011 from Anna Hazare’s anti-corruption movement. His slogan was, ‘Change the system’. CJP was born in 2026 due to NEET paper leak and CJI’s ‘cockroach’ statement. Its slogan is also, ‘Change the system.’
What AAP did in the last decade, CJP did in a few weeks. Gained more than 25.9 million followers on Instagram. This number is more than the official Instagram account of BJP. An election strategist even posted on X, ‘AAP destroyed Congress in Delhi and Punjab. Now let’s see where CJP defeats AAP.
CJP’s ‘anti-establishment’ angle, his youthful face and digital network are enough to woo AAP’s core voters. AAP’s base is the urban middle class and youth and this is the strongest base of CJP. If CJP enters the electoral fray, AAP will be the first to suffer.
2. Congress: ‘The voice that could not be made will be eaten by that voice’
The second target is Congress and the interesting thing here is that there are two opinions within the Congress itself.
On one hand, Congress is openly supporting the issues of CJP. Rahul Gandhi has made three demands and is seen standing with CJP. On the other hand, Congress must be internally afraid that CJP might take away their votes. The popularity of CJP shows how much restlessness there is in the minds of the youth. This also means that people do not see any hope in the opposition.
Experts say that CJP’s strength is Congress’s weakness. Congress does not have that young face, that digital connect and that ‘change’ slogan that CJP has. If CJP contests the elections, then the ‘young and urban’ voters of Congress can go directly to CJP.
3. BJP: ‘If the opposition becomes weak then BJP will benefit, but…’
There is reverse mathematics here. If CJP eats up Congress and also takes away AAP’s votes, there will be division of votes. This will directly benefit BJP. But CJP will not just cut off the opposition’s votes. CJP’s slogan is ‘Change the System’, which means it is directly aimed at the government. CJP is fighting on issues like NEET paper leak, unemployment and education system. These are the same issues on which BJP’s image is being tarnished.
So in reality BJP can also become the biggest target of CJP. If CJP benefits BJP by cutting opposition votes, it will be suicidal for CJP. Because of this, CJP will have to make its strategy very thoughtfully.
But is there any possibility of CJP becoming a political party?
There are 3 big arguments for CJP becoming a political party:
- History is witness to the movement becoming a party: The Jayaprakash Narayan movement of 1974 gave birth to the Janata Party in 1977, which defeated the Congress. The Anna movement of 2011 gave birth to AAP. Both movements were anti-government, both gave birth to new parties. CJP is also an anti-incumbency movement. The formula of turning a movement into a party has worked in India before and can happen with CJP too.
- Shine of digital power: CJP has garnered 29.6 million Instagram followers. This number is not less than any Indian political party. It has dominance on social media. Such a huge digital presence cannot be ignored.
- Legal path open: In India, any citizen group can register a political party by applying to the Election Commission. A lawyer from Haryana has already demanded to register CJP. Legally, there is no obstacle in CJP becoming a party.
There are 3 big arguments for CJP not becoming a political party:
- Intention not to contest elections: CJP founder Abhijeet Deepke, after the demonstration in Nagpur on 16 June 2026, clearly said that CJP will not contest the elections. Till now no official statement from CJP has come out different from this. Unless the leadership of CJP changes its decision, the chances of forming the party are slim.
- Little to no organizational structure: To become a political party, mere social media followers are not enough. Be it BJP, Congress or AAP, all have booth-level workers, clear party structure, funding, candidate selection criteria and grassroots organisation. CJP has none of these right now. It is not easy to convert the power of social media into grassroots power.
- Incomplete Policies: CJP’s agenda is currently limited only to NEET paper leak and resignation of the Education Minister. To become a national party, clear policies are needed on economy, national security, employment, farmers and regional issues. CJP doesn’t have it yet.
Danger of becoming ‘AAP-lite’
CJP is being called ‘AAP-lite’. AAP originated from the Anna movement of 2011, but it took years to achieve success at the national level. The challenge before CJP is the same, will it remain just a digital phenomenon or will it become a real political force?
