How did Congress do surprise protest outside PM Modi’s house?
Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, K.C. Many senior party leaders including Venugopal and Pawan Kheda sat on strike outside the PM residence. This demonstration of Congress remained very secret. All the leaders including Rahul marched on foot from Congress President Kharge’s house to the PM’s residence. When these people were 100 meters away, the media was informed. They had placards in their hands and slogans like ‘Prime Minister should resign’ were on their faces. Congress demanded:
- Resignation of Prime Minister and Home Minister: Congress leaders held Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah responsible for the police action against students on July 20 and demanded their resignation.
- Resignation of Education Minister: Congress also demanded the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan in the case of NEET paper leak.
- Discussion in Parliament: Earlier in the day, Rahul Gandhi had met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla along with MPs of INDIA alliance and had demanded a discussion in Parliament on the police action of July 20.
Delhi Police detained many Congress leaders including former Punjab CM and Congress MP Charanjit Channi from the protest site.
Rahul Gandhi fiercely targeted the government on this occasion. In a post on social media, he wrote, ‘We have come to PM Modi’s house to demand answers for yesterday’s brutality against the youth. The government neither wants to take any accountability nor wants to debate it in Parliament. PM and Home Minister should resign for ruining the future of India’s youth.
Rahul Gandhi called Prime Minister Modi the ‘most anti-youth Prime Minister’ of the country. He alleged, ‘Those responsible for the paper leak are roaming free, while the students protesting peacefully are being beaten.’
Rahul Gandhi also claimed that 152 exam papers have been leaked across the country, affecting about 7.5 crore students.
Will Dharmendra Pradhan resign now?
Political expert Rashid Kidwai says no in answer to this question. He said, ‘Congress coming out on the streets and protesting outside the PM’s residence is definitely a big political pressure. But resignation happens only when the government or the minister feels uncomfortable or the opposition forces him to do so.
Rashid Kidwai gives three big reasons for not resigning:
- Strong stance of the government: The government has not shown any leniency till now. Prime Minister Modi himself wished Dharmendra Pradhan on his birthday, which was like dismissing the speculations of resignation.
- Dharmendra Pradhan’s statement: Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan had termed CJP as the ‘B-team of terrorists’. This was a clear indication that the government was not taking the movement seriously.
- Parliamentary Mathematics: The government has a majority in the Lok Sabha and the unity of the opposition is also not completely strong. This step of Congress may be making headlines, but there is no legal or numerical pressure on the government to resign.
How much will the picture change with the support of Congress?
According to Rashid Kidwai, Congress openly supporting the CJP movement and staging a sit-in outside the PM residence could be a game-changer, but it is also a double-edged sword…
Advantages for CJP:
- Became a national issue: CJP’s movement is no longer limited to social media only. With Congress taking to the streets, this issue has become a national debate.
- Political legitimacy: CJP’s demands have gained political legitimacy by getting the support of the opposition leader.
- Pressure in Parliament: Rahul Gandhi has demanded a discussion on this issue with the Lok Sabha Speaker. If this discussion happens, the government will have to answer.
- Public support increased: The support of Congress and the protest outside the PM residence will give further momentum to this issue on social media and mainstream media.
Disadvantages for CJP:
- Political Colour: Congress’s support may weaken CJP’s claim of being ‘apolitical’. The government may term it as a ‘Congress conspiracy’.
- More strict stance of the government: With Congress coming on the streets, the government may become more strict and the possibilities of talks may reduce further.
- Sonam Wangchuk Status: Sonam Wangchuk has clearly said that she will continue the fast until the youth leaders are allowed to meet the MPs in the Parliament. Congress’s support may make the movement bigger, but Sonam’s personal fight is not over yet.
No permission to demonstrate on Delhi’s Lok Kalyan Marg
Demonstration is not allowed on Lok Kalyan Marg. This is a very sensitive and VVIP area. Prohibitory orders (Section 163 BNSS/Section 144) are often in force here, under which there is a strict ban on the gathering of 5 or more people together or taking out a march. Special Security Group (SPG) is deployed for the security of the Prime Minister’s residence, which is supported by Delhi Police and paramilitary forces.
