The Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) has approved the country’s first dengue vaccine ‘QDENGA’. Its biggest feature is that there will be no need to undergo any kind of test before getting it installed. Will it be able to completely protect from dengue and how much will it cost?
Is Qudenga vaccine the enemy of dengue mosquito?
Kyudenga is made by Japanese pharmaceutical company Takeda. This is a live attenuated vaccine. This means that the dengue virus is weakened and introduced into the body. This virus does not cause disease. The body’s immune system recognizes it and makes antibodies against it.
In this way, whenever the real dengue virus attacks the body, the body is already prepared and does not allow the disease to become serious. The most important thing is that this vaccine provides simultaneous protection against all four types of dengue (DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3 and DENV-4). The biggest feature is that there is no test to get it installed.
How big a deal is it to get vaccinated without testing?
Till now, before administering the dengue vaccines available in the world, it was necessary to check whether the patient has ever had dengue before or not. If someone has not had dengue before and takes the vaccine, there is a risk of the disease becoming more severe if they get dengue in the future, but this is not a concern with Qudenga.
The company conducted large-scale clinical trials. More than 20,000 children and adults were included in these. The trial proved that this vaccine is safe even for those who have never had dengue before. This is why it can prove to be a game changer for a country like India, where conducting testing on a large scale is a big challenge.
How will this vaccine work and how to get it administered?
This vaccine can be given to people between 6 years to 60 years. It has two doses, between which it is necessary to keep a gap of 3 months.
- After the first dose, initial protection against the virus is prepared in the body.
- The second dose strengthens this protection for a longer period.
According to the data from the trials, after taking the vaccine, the chances of hospitalization from dengue reduces by 84% and the risk of infection reduces by 61%.
How much will the Qudenga vaccine cost and when will it be available?
Takeda company has not yet decided the exact price of this vaccine in India. According to sources, its single dose can cost between Rs 4,000 to Rs 5,000. The company will soon start making it available in private hospitals and clinics in India. A decision is yet to be taken on when and how it will be included in the government vaccination program.
Will this vaccine be made in India only?
Takeda has signed an agreement with Indian pharmaceutical company Zydus Lifesciences. Under this, Zydus company will manufacture this vaccine in India only. Its direct benefit will be that the price of the vaccine will reduce in the coming time and its availability can be increased rapidly across the country. With this, India will not only meet its own needs, but can also supply this vaccine to other countries of the world.
So now there will be no death due to dengue?
According to experts, this vaccine is undoubtedly a big achievement, but it would be wrong to think that dengue will now be completely eradicated. The purpose of the vaccine is to prevent dengue from becoming severe and reduce the mortality rate. This is not a magic wand. To completely defeat dengue, it is most important to control mosquitoes. Identification of the disease at the right time and correct treatment is equally important. However, this vaccine is a huge and historic step in that direction.
How much havoc does dengue cause in India every year?
According to the National Center for Vector Borne Disease Control, more than 2.89 lakh cases of dengue were reported in India in 2023 and about 1,200 people died. This figure became more frightening in 2024, when more than 3.1 lakh cases were registered in the country and the death toll crossed 1,400. These figures show how big a health challenge dengue is for India.
The Qudenga vaccine has brought a big hope this monsoon. It can save crores of people of the country from the fear of dengue and prevent the disaster that comes every year which breaks thousands of families. It should also be remembered that along with the vaccine, it will be equally important to protect against mosquitoes, not to allow water to accumulate and to take the symptoms of the disease seriously. Only when technology and awareness go together, dengue can be completely defeated.
