Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni has rejected reports that she has distanced herself from America. He clearly said that Italy’s relationship with America is based on partnership, and not on bowing before anyone. The controversy started when Donald Trump claimed that Meloni had repeatedly requested to be photographed with him during the G7 summit in France. Trump also alleged that Meloni was doing this to increase her popularity.

In an interview given to an Italian news outlet, Meloni said regarding America that his government is not anti-American nor is it going to bow down to anyone. Meloni said that she had neither bowed down before nor would she bow down again. He said that he believes that western countries will be strong only when they remain united and he has always worked in this direction. According to him, strong relationships are based on clear communication and respect. A few days after the G7 summit held in Evian, France, Trump had posted on his social media platform that the Italian Prime Minister had asked him several times to take a photo.

Italy’s stance against America

Trump also said that Meloni’s popularity in Italy probably increased because he took a stance against America. She sarcastically said that now Melonie wants to make friends again to improve her image. Meloni called these statements of Trump unnecessary. He said that such continuous and unprovoked attacks have no meaning. He clearly said that his popularity does not depend on relations with any foreign leader. According to Meloni, her popularity rests on how strongly she protects Italy’s national interests. She said that she has always put the interests of Italy first and will do so in future also.

Meloni also mentioned military agreements between America and Italy. He said that the agreements related to American military bases in Italy must be respected and they cannot be changed unilaterally. He stressed that as long as he is the Prime Minister, these agreements will be followed. He said that Italy is an independent and sovereign country. In the end, Meloni gave a message to Trump saying that his popularity should not matter to anyone else and it would be better if every person concentrates on his work. After this controversy, Antonio Tajani also canceled his scheduled tour of America.
