On every Teej and festival, the women of the house wear gold. Gold has a different importance in marriage also. Even buying gold on the occasion of Akshaya Tritiya and Pushya Nakshatra is considered auspicious. In such a situation, Indian women have a stock of gold.

How much ‘gold’ do Indian women have?
According to the World Gold Council (WGC) report of January 2026, Indian women own about 11 percent of the total gold in the world. Talking in figures, only Indian women have about 24 thousand to 25 thousand tonnes of gold. This is not a small number, but a very big figure. This is considered a record at the global level.

Southern women have the highest share
Even in India, South Indian women own the maximum amount of gold jewellery. In the South, gold is considered the most sacred metal. In such a situation, gold is preserved here like a heritage. According to reports, about 40% of India’s total gold is present in South India, and about 28% of the gold is believed to be held in Tamil Nadu alone.

Gold is a better means of investment
Gold is not only a part of tradition and culture but it has also become a means of investment. Due to the rising prices of gold, even the little gold lying in people’s homes has now become worth lakhs. In such a situation, people consider the gold kept at their home as an asset. Now gold is not only a heritage and tradition but also a source of wealth and investment.
