Sonam Wangchuk Education: Sonam Wangchuk is on fast since June 28 at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar over irregularities in the NEET exam paper leak case and demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. His health is continuously deteriorating and his weight has also decreased significantly. Today is the 18th day of Sonam Wangchuk’s fast unto death. Despite his health deteriorating, he is firm on his decision.
Many well-known personalities are appealing to Wangchuk to end his fast, but Sonam Wangchuk has made it clear that he will continue his agitation until accountability is not fixed by the government. Wangchuk’s journey started from an ordinary village
Sonam Wangchuk was born on 1 September 1966 in the small village of Uletokpo in Ladakh. His father’s name is Sonam Wangyal and mother’s name is Tshering. His childhood was a very ordinary family and full of challenges. At that time, there were no facilities for modern education in his village, which is why he could not go to school and start formal studies till the age of 9. Later he was sent to Srinagar for studies, but even there the path was not easy for him because initially he faced a lot of difficulties in understanding and learning both Hindi and English languages. Despite all these difficulties, he continued his studies and did not give up.
Engineering from NIT Srinagar
Leaving behind her initial difficulties, Sonam Wangchuk obtained a degree in Mechanical Engineering from National Institute of Technology Srinagar. The interesting thing is that he bore the expenses of his education himself, for this he used to give tuition to other children. This was a glimpse of the beginning of his fighting nature and self-reliance, which later became the hallmark of his entire career.
First step taken towards education reform
After completing her engineering studies, Sonam Wangchuk devoted her energy to improving the education system of Ladakh. In 1988, he founded the Student Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh i.e. SECMOL. The objective of this institution was to provide education to the local children according to their own language and culture. He challenged the traditional rote learning system and adopted a new and practical way of making children learn by working with their hands. Later he also established the Himalayan Institute of Alternative Ladakh, which is today considered a major center of alternative education and research.

Ice Stupa technology gained international recognition
Sonam Wangchuk was not limited to just the field of education but she also innovated to solve one of the biggest problems of Ladakh i.e. water shortage. He developed the Ice Stupa technology which works like an artificial glacier made of ice and melts it in summer to provide water for irrigation. With the help of this technology, it became possible to irrigate hundreds of hectares of barren land in the area and thousands of trees and gardens could be planted there. This innovation gave him a different identity not only in India but in the whole world.
