The International Cricket Council has made a big change in the rules of Test cricket. In fact, in Test matches, the day’s play often has to end early due to bad light. As a solution to this, the ICC has approved the use of pink ball in times of poor light. However, at present it is only on trial basis.
The ICC Board’s meeting was held in Ahmedabad on 31 May i.e. the day of the final of IPL 2026. The decision on the use of pink ball was taken in this meeting. The purpose of this decision is to maximize the number of overs in Test matches. Usually, due to bad light, the day’s play is ended early, which reduces the number of overs in the match.
Let us tell you that the first pink ball test match in the history of cricket was played in 2015. In that match, Australia defeated New Zealand by 3 wickets. After that, matches with pink ball have been played between countries from time to time. Pink ball can be used during bad light only if both the teams agree on it.
Coaches will be able to come to the field
ICC has made another major change. Now whenever there is a drinks break during the matches, the coaches will be able to enter the field to talk to the players. Another major decision was approved in the meeting held in Ahmedabad. Match officials will now be able to look at Hawk-Eye data to detect suspicious actions by bowlers. This new rule will be implemented from October 1, 2026.
