Iran has issued a strong warning while reaffirming its sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran says that both commercial and naval vessels will have to strictly follow shipping protocols in this important sea corridor otherwise they may have to face serious consequences.
IRGC issued statement
According to a statement issued by Iranian media, Khatam al-Anbiya, the central headquarters of the Iranian military, has announced that the management of the Strait of Hormuz is carried out by the Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran with full power. The military command stressed that all ships, commercial vessels and tankers must travel only on designated routes and obtain permission from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy. Violation of these rules will seriously jeopardize the safety of their traffic.
Tehran also warned international naval contingents deployed in the area that any obstruction to shipping administration or shipping traffic would be met with swift retaliation. Let us tell you that this warning has come at a time when Qatar has issued a statement against imposing any kind of permanent sea duty on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
Qatar against collecting tax from ships
Speaking at the Shangri-La Dialogue Security Summit in Singapore, Qatar’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Defense Sheikh Saud bin Abdul Rahman Al Thani confirmed that Doha and its regional allies remain against the indefinite tax. Qatar and Gulf partners have clearly stated that imposing tariffs will always affect consumers, so we are against it.
However, the Qatari minister suggested that temporary financial solutions could be negotiated in special circumstances. He said that if they (Iranians) say that they will use it for removing landmines or for any other temporary use, then it is an issue that can be negotiated.
