Great batsman Sunil Gavaskar said on Monday that India’s ODI series against England next month will be a great opportunity for Rohit Sharma to show that he can open the innings for India in next year’s 50-over World Cup.
Rohit and Virat Kohli (if available), both playing only one format for India, will make a comeback in the three-match ODI series against England from July 14-19.
Gavaskar said that Rohit knows what his position is to make it to next year’s ODI World Cup.
In a conversation organized by Sony Sports, Gavaskar said, “When has Rohit Sharma not been talked about? There has always been a lot of talk about Rohit Sharma. ”
“He knows what his situation is,” he said. I think there has obviously been a clear exchange of information between important people and Rohit Sharma. He knows very well what his situation is and he just has to perform consistently in the next one and a half years till the World Cup. ”
Gavaskar said, “I don’t think he is a person who feels any pressure because of his talent and ability. England (tour) is a great opportunity for him to show that even after one and a half years, he will continue to open the innings for India.
Gavaskar said that the assessment of any Indian player never ends and senior batsmen know that they have to continue performing well.

He said, “When you are a young player making your debut, you are monitored to see how you handle international (cricket) pressure, whether you have the temperament and ability to compete internationally. ”
He said, “What happens in Indian cricket is that players are constantly monitored right from the beginning and this pressure almost never ends. Therefore, this monitoring or criticism will not be a new thing for these players. ”
He said, “He knows how to handle pressure and he knows the only way is to keep scoring runs, take catches, get run-outs and also be ready to give advice to the captain because he has been a captain himself and has the experience.” ”
Gavaskar said that in the case of Rohit and Kohli, more focus will be given to their physical abilities, which both of them can handle easily.
He said, “As you age and go beyond 35 years, more attention is paid to your physical fitness rather than your temperament. With the experience they have, they will handle it easily. Meanwhile, Gavaskar expressed surprise at the timing of England all-rounder Ben Stokes’s retirement from international cricket.
