A new dispute has been added between India and Bangladesh. Bangladesh has refused to accept India’s explanation regarding the detention of Prime Minister Tariq Rahman’s advisor Zahed Ur Rahman at Delhi Airport. The Bangladesh government described India’s reply as not satisfactory and called this entire incident unfortunate and sad. Bangladesh Foreign Ministry spokesperson said that his government is not satisfied with the statement given by the Indian Foreign Ministry regarding this matter.

He said that India had already been clearly informed through diplomatic channels that Zahed Ur Rahman was coming to India to lead the Bangladeshi delegation in the meeting of ‘Indian Ocean Rim Association’ (IORA). Despite this, the treatment meted out to him at Delhi airport was not right and is extremely regrettable.

Actually, Zahed Ur Rehman had come to India this month to participate in the IORA meeting, but he was detained for a long time at Delhi Airport. After this incident he became angry and decided to return back to Dhaka instead of staying in India. On this matter, Indian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that Zahed ur Rehman had reached India on June 14 on a private i.e. non-diplomatic passport and SAARC visa. According to India, he was stopped due to some security reasons during the initial investigation

What did the Foreign Ministry tell?

The Foreign Ministry said that Zahed Ur Rehman’s name was included in a blacklist related to security. It was said that he was known for using harsh and hateful language against India. For this reason, his security check was done at the airport. India also said that after completion of the investigation, it was confirmed that the purpose of his visit was to participate in the multilateral meeting of IORA.

After this he was allowed to enter India. However, despite getting permission, he decided to return back to Bangladesh on his own will. There are clearly visible differences between the two countries regarding this entire matter. While India is calling it a normal security procedure, Bangladesh is considering it against diplomatic protocol and inappropriate.
