SpaceX Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Elon Musk has said that India’s birth rate has now reached below the level which is considered necessary to maintain the population of a country stable. He said this through a post on social media platform X and expressed concern over the changing demographic situation of India.

While sharing a post on X, Elon Musk said that India’s birth rate has now fallen below the replacement level. He also said that this rate among the educated class had reached below this level long ago. In his statement, Musk cited the data of media organization ‘AF Post’, in which there has been a continuous decline in India’s fertility rate.

Big decline in India’s fertility rate
According to AF Post, for the first time in India, the total fertility rate (TFR) has reached a very low level in the history of the country. According to statistics, in just one decade this rate has come down from 2.3 to 1.9. It was also told in the report that the fertility rate in the country’s capital Delhi has now reached 1.2, which is less than many developed countries like Finland.
What is replacement level?
Replacement level is the minimum fertility rate that is considered necessary to maintain the population of a country stable. Generally this rate is considered to be 2.1. According to the 2025 World Population Status Report of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), India’s total fertility rate has declined to 1.9 births per woman, which is below the replacement rate of 2.1. This means that on average, Indian women are no longer having as many children as is needed to maintain a given generation size for the next generation.

At present the population of India is more than 1.46 billion. In the year 2023, India had overtaken China to become the world’s most populous country. However, figures from the United Nations Population Fund show that the fertility rate in the country has been continuously decreasing for the last few years.
Improvement in health and education, but challenges remain
According to the report, there have been significant improvements in the fields of health and education in India, but many big challenges still exist. Problems like maternal mortality rate, gender inequality, early marriage and early pregnancy still remain a matter of concern.
