There is growing international concern over the ongoing protests and alleged restrictions on communication services in Pakistan Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoK). British MP Iqbal Mohamed has expressed deep concern over the situation in the region, saying that many British citizens are not able to contact their families, which has created a feeling of great restlessness and insecurity among them.
In a video message, MP Iqbal Mohammad said that he is continuously receiving complaints from the people of his constituency that there has been complete loss of contact with their relatives and loved ones living in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir. He said that the news of communication shutdown, arrests and increasing tension is extremely worrying.
The British MP specifically referred to reports of arrests of British citizens, communications restrictions and a breakdown in communication between Pakistani authorities and the Joint Awami Action Committee. According to him, peaceful protest, freedom of expression and access to communication are the basic principles of a democratic society and the protection of these rights becomes even more important in stressful situations.
Iqbal Mohammad appealed to the Pakistan government to immediately restore communication services, remove all restrictions and resolve disputes through peaceful dialogue. He said that he, along with other MPs of the All-Party Parliamentary Committee on Kashmir (APPG on Kashmir), has written a letter to the British Foreign Ministry.
I have joined with cross party MPs and members of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Kashmir, to write to the UK Foreign Office to seek clarification on:

The letter demands the British government to clarify its assessment of the situation in PoJK, provide assistance to the affected British citizens and their families and put diplomatic pressure on Pakistan to reduce tensions. The MP said that Britain should play an active role in ensuring peace and stability in the region using all available diplomatic channels.
Pakistan uncomfortable with questions on POK, silence on deaths and attack on critics, said- this is our internal matter
Pakistan has reacted strongly to the questions raised by some British MPs regarding the protests, shutdown of phone and internet services and arrests in PoK. Islamabad termed these comments as “unnecessary” and “beyond the facts” and said that outside interference in the internal affairs of Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Pakistan will not be accepted.

Amidst the ongoing protests in Pakistan Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoK), alleged communication shutdown and questions being raised regarding the deaths of people, instead of giving answers, the Pakistan government has targeted the critics. The statement, which described the concerns of British MPs and the Kashmiri diaspora as “irresponsible”, made no mention of how the deaths of protesters and allegations of human rights violations would be investigated.
Questions regarding family safety
In its statement, Islamabad talked about law and order and sovereignty, but remained silent on the suffering of those families who are worried about the lack of contact with their relatives and their safety. On the contrary, Pakistan accused the British MPs of “not being aware of the facts”.
Analysts believe that when the demand for transparency and accountability is rising at the international level, this stance of the Pakistan government raises many new questions. The biggest question is that if everything is normal then why the concerns being raised regarding communication restrictions, arrests and deaths are not being answered openly.
