Isobutanol Blending in Diesel: There is an uproar across the country regarding blending of ethanol in petrol. Now the government is preparing for blending in diesel. Central Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari said that the government is trying to reduce fuel imports. Under this, the government is now busy preparing for the next phase of its biofuel program. Making a big announcement, Gadkari said that under this program, work is now underway on a plan to allow mixing of up to 15 percent isobutanol with diesel.
Talking about the roadmap regarding alternative fuel, Nitin Gadkari said that ethanol cannot be mixed directly with diesel, hence work is being done to convert ethanol into isobutanol as a practical and efficient alternative. He said, “Isobutanol can become a good alternative to diesel.” Our objective is to achieve energy security by promoting clean fuels.

Government did test on generator
Talking about isobutanol, Gadkari said that the ministry has successfully run two generator sets on 100 percent ethanol and isobutanol. This proves that such engines can be made which can run on these fuels. He said, “This technology indicates that it can be adopted on a large scale in the coming years.”
What is isobutanol blending?
The gas is mixed with carbon monoxide and hydrogen gas. This reaction produces isobutyraldehyde. Hydrogen is added to this aldehyde, due to which pure isobutanol is prepared.
- Isobutanol has more energy than ethanol, which does not have a negative impact on the mileage and performance of the vehicle.
- When 15% isobutanol is mixed in diesel, the harmful smoke emitted from vehicles reduces significantly.
- Isobutanol can be easily mixed with diesel scientifically.
