Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Asif has once again given a provocative statement amid the ongoing protests in PoK. Defending the death of protesters in PoK, Asif said that those who have taken to the streets against Islamabad consider them as enemies like India.
Speaking to a local TV media, Asif defended the government’s actions and made no distinction between those protesting against the administration in India and PoK. He said that I keep the protesters in the same category as India and consider them as enemies like India. He also rejected the possibility of talks with the protesters and called them enemies of Pakistan.
Asif, who was in the news for making many controversial statements during ‘Operation Sindoor’, made this comment when Pakistani security forces opened fire on the protest march being taken out under the leadership of the banned ‘Joint Awami Action Committee’ (JAAC). Many people have been killed in this action. This is one of the deadliest actions in Pakistan occupied Kashmir in recent years.
March from Rawalkot to Muzaffarabad
Thousands of JAAC supporters marched from Rawalkot to Muzaffarabad on Tuesday and demanded abolition of 12 assembly seats reserved for Kashmiri refugees. JAAC says that this arrangement weakens the political rights of the residents of PoK and the political parties of Islamabad are able to influence the process of forming the government in this area. Leaders say that only people living in PoK should have the right to elect the assembly there.
Death of younger brother of JAAC founder
According to JAAC, about 5,000 people were taking part in a peaceful march when security personnel allegedly opened fire. JAAC claimed that at least 14 of their workers were killed and more than two dozen people were injured. Among those killed was Usman Nazir, younger brother of JAAC founding member Omar Nazir.
This has further increased tension in PoK, where protests have been going on for weeks. According to several reports, more than 80 people have been killed in the protests that began on June 5 and the subsequent army crackdown. Earlier, 40 people had died, including 34 protesters and 6 security personnel.
