Lucknow Super Giants captain Rishabh Pant admitted after the six-wicket defeat against Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League on Wednesday that his batsmen did not score enough runs.
Chasing the target of 142 runs of Super Giants, Delhi came in as an impact player, Sameer Rizvi’s unbeaten inning of 70 runs in 47 balls with four sixes and five fours and his unbroken 110-run fifth wicket partnership with Tristan Stubbs (39 not out, 32 balls, three fours, one six) despite losing four wickets for 26 runs in 17.1 overs. Won by scoring 145 runs on the wicket.
Earlier, the Super Giants team was all out for 141 runs in 18.4 overs in front of the sharp bowling of fast bowlers Lungi Ngidi (three wickets for 27 runs) and T Natarajan (three wickets for 29 runs). Kuldeep Yadav (two wickets for 31 runs) also took two wickets.
Pant said after the match, “We were not able to make a big partnership in batting. The plan was that (Nicholas) Puran would come at number five and take charge in the middle overs. We needed a player who could add some runs as an ‘impact player’ because we did not have enough runs on a good pitch.
He said, “We had set a special role for Ayush Badoni so that he could leave a mark when our early wickets fell early. The new ball was helping a lot but you cannot put pressure on the opposition team by scoring 140 runs (141 runs). Even 20 extra runs cost us dearly.
When Pant, who opened the innings in this match, was asked whether he would play the role of an opener in the upcoming matches also, he did not give a clear answer. He said, “It was a 50-50 percent decision but you will definitely see me playing in the top order.”
Pant was unfortunately run out and he said, “The best way to recover from my dismissal is to ignore it because I can’t control it.”
