Glorious history of 222 year old temple
The history of Maa Daat Kali temple is very interesting and ancient. This temple was established on 13 June 1804. At that time, when the road connecting Dehradun and Saharanpur was being constructed, the foundation of this temple was laid. This area is surrounded by Shivalik hills and dense forests. Today this temple remains a center of unwavering devotion not only for the devotees coming from Uttarakhand but also from Western Uttar Pradesh and abroad. It is counted among the oldest and most active temples of the area.

Who established the temple?
There is a famous folk tale behind the construction of the temple. It is said that when an engineer was working on this highway and tunnel project during the British rule, he had to face a lot of obstacles in his work. During this time, Goddess Kali appeared to him in his dream and gave him one of her idols and ordered him to build a temple at the same place. After getting the permission of the goddess, the engineer handed over the idol to the local Mahant Sukhbir Gusain. Mahant Gusain himself had built the temple there as per the dignity of the goddess.
Temple name changed with English pronunciation
The story behind the name of the temple ‘Dat Kali’ is also quite unique. Actually, the word ‘daat’ is directly related to ‘tooth’. According to mythological beliefs, in the fierce form of Goddess Kali, her teeth are seen protruding, hence its real name was ‘Dantakali’ temple. But when the British officers came to this area, it was difficult for them to pronounce the Sanskrit word ‘Dantakali’ correctly. They started calling it ‘Dat’ and gradually this name became so popular in colloquial language that today the whole world knows it by the name of Dat Kali Temple.
Protector of travelers and goddess of beginnings
In Hindu religion, Mother Kali is considered a symbol of divine power, who is fierce towards the wicked and loving towards the devotees. Regarding Daat Kali temple, it is believed that Maa Kali resides here as the ‘Goddess of Beginning’. Being situated at the entrance of Dehradun city, she is considered the protector of the road.
