While hunting in the forest, King Pandu inadvertently shot an arrow at a sage and his wife, who were in the form of a deer. Before his death, the sage got angry and cursed Pandu that if he ever went to his wives, he would die that very moment. Due to this curse, Pandu started living in exile.

After King Pandu received a curse, he left the kingdom and started living in the forest with his wives Kunti and Madri. They started living like saints in the quiet forests of the Himalayas. This life of giving up royal pleasures and adopting penance and simplicity later became the reason for the birth of Pandavas.
