It has been more than 60 years since the dowry system was declared illegal in the country, but a video going viral on social media has forced people to think again. In this video which is spreading rapidly on the internet, the dowry allegedly received by the groom during the marriage is being openly announced. It is being claimed that the groom was given a BMW car, Rs 1 crore and lakhs of rupees in cash. As soon as the video surfaced, there was an uproar on social media and people started expressing anger calling it an open display of dowry system.
‘Gifts’ worth crores counted in wedding
Regarding the viral video, it is being claimed that this matter is from Ghaziabad. In the video, a person is heard on the mike allegedly announcing the dowry received by the groom. According to the video, the groom was given “1 BMW, 1 crore, 1 lakh 11 thousand rupees in cash”. The people present nearby also seem to be hearing all this. A total of 71 jewelery was given in the wedding, of which 11 were of diamond, 42 of gold and 18 of silver. However, claims are also being made that the middlemen arranging marriages have been given Scorpio and the people handling small jobs have been given Splendor bikes. As soon as the video came on the internet, it quickly went viral and people started reacting strongly to it.

Questions raised regarding dowry law
After the video went viral, many people raised the question that when both taking and giving dowry are illegal in India, then how are such announcements being made openly. Let us tell you that Dowry Prohibition Act was implemented in India in 1961, under which giving dowry is considered a crime. According to the law, there is a provision of jail and fine if found guilty. However, the authenticity of the viral video and the claims made in it have not been officially confirmed.

People’s anger erupted on social media
Internet users expressed their displeasure over the video. One user wrote, “Even today people are showing dowry as a status symbol.” Another said, “If this is true then action should be taken.” Another user wrote, “Dowry has ruined the lives of so many daughters.” While some people criticized the groom and his family, many users demanded making the dowry law more stringent. The video has sparked a new debate on social media regarding the dowry system.
