‘Only your mic doesn’t work’, Speaker taunts Rahul Gandhi on Venugopal’s suspicion that his mic is switched off

In Parliament on Thursday (April 16), Rahul Gandhi expressed doubt over the working of Congress MP KC Venugopal’s mic. When asked a question about this, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla replied jokingly. During the special session, Venugopal raised questions on the government’s intentions behind the proposal of 33% reservation for women in the House and asked why it was not implemented in 2024.

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah stood up and objected that how can the merits of the bill be questioned without discussion. Meanwhile, when the Speaker was starting to explain the proceedings of the House to Venugopal, a member of the opposition raised a question whether the MP’s mic was on. One leader said, “Mike was mute.”

After this, Rahul Gandhi also pointed towards the mike and said, “Mike is not working.” On this, the Speaker of the Lok Sabha taunted and said, “Mike is on, mike is on, it is yours that is switched off.”

Rahul Gandhi has made allegations many times

Speaker Om Birla’s comment points towards Rahul Gandhi’s allegations in which he had said that mikes are switched off while opposition leaders are speaking in Parliament. During his visit to Britain in 2023, Rahul Gandhi in his address had alleged that the voice of the opposition is suppressed in Parliament and he also said that his mike was switched off several times. Even in 2024, a Congress leader had claimed that Rahul Gandhi’s mic had been switched off in Parliament, which had created an uproar.

Three important bills related to amendment in the Women’s Reservation Act and establishment of the Delimitation Commission were introduced in the Lok Sabha today amid heavy protests. The beginning of the special session of Parliament was quite stormy. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju and Union Home Minister Amit Shah had a heated argument with opposition leaders like Samajwadi MP Akhilesh Yadav and Congress MP KC Venugopal.
