Lord Shri Krishna said, O Arjun, Ekadashi of Adhik Maas (Laund) is going to provide immense virtue, its name is Padmini. By fasting on this Ekadashi, man goes to Vishnuloka. I first told the rules of fasting on this Ekadashi to Devarshi Narad. This law destroys many sins and provides liberation and devotion. Listen carefully to its result.
This beautiful story was told by Maharishi Pulastya to Naradji that once Kartavirya imprisoned Ravana in his prison. Maharishi Pulastya rescued him by pleading with Kartavirya. Hearing this incident, Naradji asked Maharishi Pulastya – “O Maharishi! How did Kartavirya conquer this elusive Ravana, who had conquered Lord Indra along with all the gods? Please tell me in detail.
Maharishi Pulastya said, O Narad, first listen to the story of the origin of Kartavirya. In Tretayuga, a king named Kartavirya ruled in a city named Mahishmati. That king had a hundred wives, none of them had a son capable of taking charge of the kingdom. Then the king respectfully invited the Brahmins. Yagya was performed to get a son, but all remained in vain. Just as pleasures seem boring to an unhappy person, similarly the king also found his kingdom sad without a son.

At last, realizing that he had attained the siddhis only through penance, he went to the forest to perform penance. His wife, who was Pramada, daughter of King Harishchandra, left her clothes and went to Gandhamadan mountain with her husband. These people meditated at that place for ten thousand years, but could not attain success. The king’s body remained only a skeleton of bones. Seeing this, Pramada respectfully asked Mahasati Anasuya that my master has spent ten thousand years doing penance, but till now the Lord has not been pleased so that I can get a son. What is the reason for this?
Hearing Pramada’s question, Goddess Anasuya said that Adhik (Laund) month which comes after thirty-six months, has two Ekadashi. In this, the name of Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha is Padmini and the name of Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha is Param. By keeping them awake and fasting, God will definitely grant you a son.
After that Goddess Anasuya told the rules of the fast. Queen Pramada observed Ekadashi fast and vigil at night as per the method described by Goddess Anasuya. Lord Vishnu was very pleased with this and asked him to ask for a boon. Queen Pramada said, Lord, please give this boon to my husband.
Hearing the words of Queen Pramada, Lord Vishnu said, O Queen Pramada, Malmas is very dear to me. Among those also, Ekadashi date is my favorite. You observed the fast and night vigil of this Ekadashi systematically, that is why I am very happy with you. Having said this, Lord Vishnu said to the king, O king, ask for the boon of your choice, because your wife has pleased me.
Hearing the nectar of God’s voice, the king said, O Lord, please grant me the best son, worshiped by all and invincible by gods, demons, humans etc. apart from you. The Lord disappeared after giving the desired boon to the king. After this both of them returned to their state.
When the time came, Kartavirya was born as his son. He was invincible by everyone except Lord Shri Hari. Kartavirya had won over Ravana. All this was the effect of fasting on Padmini Ekadashi. After narrating this story, Maharishi Pulastya left from there.
Shri Krishna said, O Arjun, son of Kunti, I have described the fast of Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Adhik (Laund) month. The person who observes this fast goes to Vishnuloka. Sutji said, Oh great sages, whatever you wanted to know, I have told it. Now what do you want to know? Those people who will listen to this fast story, they will become the possessor of heaven.
