Pakistan’s tenure is ending at the end of this year. The newly elected member countries will replace Pakistan, Panama, Denmark, Greece and Somalia, whose tenure is ending. These countries will take up their seats from January 1, 2027 and will remain in the Council till December 31, 2028.
Two-thirds votes required for non-permanent member
To win the non-permanent seat of the Security Council, any candidate country has to get at least two-thirds of the votes of the member states present and voting in the United Nations General Assembly. If all 193 member countries are present and vote, then at least 129 votes are required for victory. The countries that abstain from voting are not considered included in the voting.
Elections held between 7 countries for 5 seats
News agency Xinhua said that this year a total of seven candidates were in the fray for five seats. Austria, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago and Zimbabwe were selected in the first round of voting. After this, three more rounds of voting took place, after which Kyrgyzstan defeated Philippines and secured the seat.
5 permanent and 10 non-permanent members in UNSC
There are a total of 15 members in the United Nations Security Council. Of these, Britain, China, France, Russia and America are five permanent members. The remaining ten members are non-permanent, whose seats are distributed on the basis of different geographical areas. Every year new members are elected to five of these seats. The newly selected five countries represent the African Group, the Asia-Pacific Group, the Latin American and Caribbean Group and the Western European and Other Countries Group.
