Monsoon Session 2026: Rajya Sabha proceedings resumed at 3 pm amid the uproar on Wednesday. During this, Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge gave his speech. He expressed his views regarding the lathicharge and violence by Delhi Police on students that took place on Monday, 20th July.

Kharge said, ‘I am deeply distressed by the way lathi charge and violence was carried out against the students on Monday. Boys and girls aged 15-16 years were beaten with batons. He was mistreated. Even their clothes were torn. Dangerous weapons like pellet gun and shock baton were used against them. This scene was shameful for the entire country. No matter how strongly it is condemned, it is less.

Kharge placed these demands on behalf of the opposition in Rajya Sabha
Kharge said, ‘After this, the way the police forcefully assaulted the Leader of Opposition and other opposition leaders and MPs yesterday. He was picked up and taken into custody. That is also extremely condemnable and worrying. Such behavior with public representatives is contrary to the dignity of Indian democracy.
During this, he also made many demands from the chair. He said, ‘The Home Minister should give a detailed statement in both the Houses and clarify who is responsible for the lathicharge on students and this action against opposition leaders. Also tell what action will be taken against the culprits.
Kharge demanded, ‘The Prime Minister should publicly apologize for the misbehavior with the students and assure the students of the country that they will never be treated like criminals in future.’
Kharge said, ‘A comprehensive, serious and time-bound discussion should be held in the Parliament on the continuously collapsing education and examination system of the country, so that the questions related to the future of the students can be resolved and the immediate resignation of the Education Minister responsible for all this should be taken.’
