The famous St. Stephen’s College of Delhi University has created history. The college administration has appointed Professor Susan Elias as the new principal. She will be the first woman principal of the college and will assume charge from June 1, 2026. This decision is being considered a major change in the 145 year history of the college.
Professor Susan Elias becomes the first woman principal
The official statement issued by St. Stephen’s College said that Professor Susan Elias will take over as the 14th Principal of the college. With this, she has become the first woman to reach this post in the history of the institute. The Supreme Council of the college has approved her appointment. This declaration is signed by the Right Revd Dr. Paul Swaroop, Chairman of the College and Bishop of Delhi.
The post of principal was vacant for a long time
According to the information, the post of Principal in the college was lying vacant for a long time. The selection of the new principal was delayed due to the appointment process and administrative reasons. Now after the new appointment the college has got permanent leadership.

Long experience in education and research field
Professor Susan Elias has more than three decades of experience in the field of education and research. He has worked on important positions in many prestigious educational institutions of the country.
Recently, she was working as Pro Vice Chancellor Research in Chandigarh University, Uttar Pradesh. Before this, she also served as Director Research in Hindustan University. Apart from this, she has served on many important positions including Professor, Dean and Head of Electronics Engineering Department in Vellore Institute of Technology.
The college was established in 1881
St. Stephen’s College was established in the year 1881. It is included among the oldest and prestigious colleges of Delhi University. Many famous leaders, officials and educationists of the country have studied from this institute. The appointment of Professor Susan Elias is being considered as the beginning of a new era for the college.
