Congress’s new Uttar Pradesh in-charge Rajendra Pal Gautam on Friday (June 26) said that he will try to live up to the trust of the party leadership and work towards removing the ‘anti-Bahujan government’ of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from the state. He expressed gratitude to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and former President Rahul Gandhi.
Gautam, who comes from the Dalit community, has been given the charge of the state a few months before the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. Gautam, who was a minister in the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party government in Delhi, joined the Congress in September 2024 and a few months later, he was made the chairman of the party’s Scheduled Caste department.

Gautam has been given the responsibility of in-charge of Uttar Pradesh in place of Avinash Pandey. Pandey had earlier played the role of in-charge of Rajasthan and Jharkhand. After his appointment, Gautam told PTI, “My aim is to strengthen the Congress in Uttar Pradesh again under the leadership of Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi and to oust the anti-Bahujan government of BJP from power. I will work for this purpose.” He claimed that the Bahujan community of the state is looking at Rahul Gandhi as their leader. Assembly elections are likely to be held in Uttar Pradesh early next year.
