Are Daily Supplements Really Necessary: Nowadays, opening a bottle of supplements as soon as you wake up in the morning has become a daily habit of many people. Some people feel that this will increase the body’s immune capacity, some are taking vitamins for more energy, while others are taking different capsules every day in the hope of better health. Social media, gym trainers and advertisements also assure that the path to good health passes through supplements. But doctors say that the body does not work like a warehouse, where as soon as extra vitamins are stored, health automatically improves.

What do experts say

Amit Prakash Singh, internal medicine expert at Delhi’s CK Birla Hospital, told TOI that people often assume that if a vitamin is good for the body, then more of it will provide more benefits. Whereas the reality is different from this. The body uses nutrients only in the quantity that it needs. If the body is already getting adequate nutrition, then excess supplements often get flushed out of the body without providing any benefit.

Excessive consumption is sometimes harmful

He told that some vitamins like Vitamin C dissolve in water and are excreted from the body, but elements like Vitamin A and D can get stored in the body. This is the reason why excessive consumption sometimes becomes harmful. A major research by America’s US Preventive Services Task Force also made it clear that taking vitamins daily in healthy people did not provide any concrete evidence of protection from heart disease or cancer.

effect on body parts

According to doctors, the biggest misconception is that people consider natural things to be completely safe. Whereas many herbal and natural supplements can also have adverse effects on the body. Dr. says that excess Vitamin A and D can accumulate in the body and cause damage to the liver, kidneys and bones. Taking iron pills unnecessarily can cause stomach upset and affect body parts in the long run.

Experts say that no supplement can compete with real food. Fruits, vegetables, pulses, nuts and whole grains not only provide vitamins, but also bring fiber, antioxidants and many essential nutrients. This is why doctors often recommend improving your diet before taking supplements. An orange not only provides vitamin C, but also provides water, fiber and other essential elements to the body.

What supplements should not be taken?

However, this does not mean that supplements are useless. In some circumstances these prove to be very important. Such as deficiency of Vitamin D, anemia, folic acid during pregnancy or such patients whose nutrients are not absorbed properly in their body. But even in such a situation, correct dosage and doctor’s monitoring is considered necessary.
