Himanta Biswa Sarma’s record third victory in Assam not only saved power but also ushered in a new and challenging political era for Muslims. BJP CM Himanta, who won 82 out of 126 seats, made many objectionable statements against Muslims in election rallies. On the other hand, the victory of Badruddin Ajmal and the defeat of his party AIUDF has indicated a significant change in the Muslim politics of Assam. But the benefit to the community has now turned into a big question. How?

Himanta Biswa Sarma’s big statements against Muslims

Himanta Biswa Sarma called Muslims ‘Mian’ and made many controversial and strong statements one after the other:

Shoot signal: He shared a video on social media (which was later removed), in which he was allegedly seen making a symbolic gesture of firing a rifle at people of the Muslim community. On this, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi had lodged a complaint with the police.

‘Ready to go to jail’: Responding to Owaisi’s complaint, Sarma said, ‘I am ready to go to jail, what do I have to do? I don’t know about any video… but I am against Bangladeshi infiltrators and will remain against them.

Call for ‘non-cooperation’: In February 2026, he called for ‘non-cooperation’ and ‘civil disobedience’ against Muslims of Bengali origin, so as to create an environment in which ‘they cannot live in Assam’. He appealed to the people, ‘Before boarding a rickshaw, think whose rickshaw you are boarding.’

‘Go away on your own’ strategy: In March 2026, he openly said that he wanted to create such ‘pressure’ that Bengali-speaking Muslims would ‘go away on their own’. He said measures like eviction, depriving government benefits and firing rubber bullets at illegal infiltrators can be taken.

Direct warning: Sarma also said, ‘If the Muslim population in Assam crosses 50% then non-Muslims will not survive.’

Will the third term of the Chief Minister increase the problems of Muslims?

Given the past policies and future promises of Sarma and his government, the next five years could be extremely difficult for the Muslims of Assam, especially those of Bengali origin, for 3 reasons:

Political marginalization in the assembly: After the 2023 delimitation, the number of seats where Muslims had influence reduced from 35 to an estimated 20. BJP did not give ticket to even a single Muslim candidate in the 2026 elections. The Muslim vote got completely divided between parties like Congress and AIUDF.

Implementation of strict policies: BJP’s manifesto promises to implement Uniform Civil Code (UCC), make strict laws against ‘Love Jihad’ and ‘Land Jihad’. Besides, there has been talk of vacating the land from illegal infiltrators (whose target is Bengali Muslims) and giving land rights under ‘Mission Basandhara’.

Continuation of evictions and oppression: Sarma had already clearly said that during the last tenure, encroachment was removed from more than 1.5 lakh bighas of land and this campaign will continue. Thousands of people have been sent to Bangladesh under the ‘pushback’ policy, in which many Indian citizens have also been victims.

So will we not get the benefit of Badruddin Ajmal’s victory?

Badruddin Ajmal won from the newly created Binnakandi seat by 35,380 votes, but this could not conceal a major devastation for his party AIUDF. The party got only 2 seats, which is its worst performance till date. From this:

Limited advantage: It is a big victory for Ajmal to return to state politics after losing his Dhubri seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. But with only two MLAs it is extremely difficult to mount effective resistance in the Assembly.

Historical decline: The downfall of AIUDF, once seen as the ‘protector’ of Muslims, began after the release of the draft NRC in 2018. About 19 lakh people were left out, half of whom were Bengali Muslims. The party failed to protect its vote bank.

Migration to Congress: Assam Congress breaks alliance with AIUDF to avoid BJP’s allegations of ‘Muslim appeasement’. The result was that Muslim voters left AIUDF and turned to Congress.

BJP’s landslide victory and Himanta Biswa Sarma’s bold strategy have definitely created an environment where they can implement their agenda more strongly. Badruddin Ajmal’s victory is certainly a symbolic achievement, but there is little hope of any major political benefit for the Muslims of Assam from it. The twin challenges of political marginalization and harsh policies will remain the biggest hurdles facing the community in the next five years.

Exit polls of West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry have now started shaping the election picture. However, a common and decisive trend has emerged among these figures, where the participation of women has been more than that of men. Will this lead decide the power this time?

Exit polls indicate that BJP may get an edge in Bengal, although some surveys claim the comeback of Trinamool Congress. There is a possibility of BJP’s hat-trick in Assam, while in Kerala, there are signs of UDF’s return after the change of power. The biggest twist has come to light in Tamil Nadu, where actor Vijay’s party TVK can cause a big upset in its very first election with 98 to 120 seats. NDA seems to be getting lead in Puducherry. Amidst all this, one thing is clear that this time women voters have emerged as not just a number but a decisive force.

Also read: Last time it was cancelled, now it is even more special, PM Modi will go on Europe tour next month, know what is being planned?

Women’s lead: a sign of change in electoral behavior

Amidst the discussion of record 92.47 percent voting in the West Bengal Assembly elections 2026, the most important and decisive aspect was the unprecedented participation of women. According to Election Commission data, women not only voted in large numbers in both the phases, but also left men behind in percentage terms. In the second phase, the voting percentage of women voters was recorded at 92.28 percent, while this figure of men was 91.07 percent. That means women left men behind with an increase of about 1.2 percent. This difference may seem small, but in a state with such a large voter base, its impact can be wide-ranging and decisive.

The same trend was seen in the first phase also. In the voting held on April 23, 92.69 percent women voted, while the participation of men was 90.92 percent. That means women’s participation remained consistently high in both the phases. This is not a coincidence, but an indication of a permanent electoral behaviour. The importance of this trend also increases because the total number of voters in West Bengal is 6.81 crore. If the participation of women in such a large voter base is more than that of men, then it has the potential to directly decide the direction of the election results.

In other states too, women voted more than men

Assam and Puducherry also broke their respective records. 85.91 percent voting was recorded in Assam and about 90 percent voting was recorded in Puducherry, which is the highest figure there so far. Record voting was recorded in the Assam Assembly elections 2026, in which women once again left men behind. According to official figures, the total voting was 85.91%, which is the highest ever in Assam. Earlier in 2016 there was 84.67% voting and in 2021 there was 82.42% voting. This time the participation of women voters was 86.50%, which is more than 85.33% of men. Interestingly, in 2021, women voting had fallen to 82.01%, but this time a sharp jump was seen.

Women participation is more in Tamil Nadu

In Tamil Nadu too, participation of women was more than that of men, where 85.76 percent women voted, while the figure of men was 83.57 percent. Voting took place on all 234 seats in Tamil Nadu on April 23, where the total number of voters was 5.73 crore. On the same day, voting was also held on 152 seats in West Bengal, where the number of voters was 3.6 crore.

Average voting in Kerala Assembly elections

The average voting in the Kerala Assembly elections was recorded at 78.23 percent, while a deep analysis of the Election Commission’s data shows that the real story of this election is hidden somewhere in the votes of women. This time, women voters have given a new dimension to the electoral scenario by registering a decisive lead in the Kerala Assembly elections 2026. According to the Election Commission, 80.86% women voted, while the participation of men was 75.01%. This difference of about 6 percent is not just a figure, but a strong political signal.

When will the election results be declared?

The election results of five states including West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala and Assam will be declared on May 4. Exit polls are making their own claims, but this record voting has decided that the public will definitely vote for their rights. This election will be remembered not only for political power, but also for setting new parameters of democratic participation. Especially the increasing participation of women has made it clear that a new power has now come to the center in India’s electoral politics, which is not only casting votes but is also deciding the direction of the results.

Assam Election 2026: Congress leader Pawan Khera has now reached the Supreme Court after his anticipatory bail was rejected by the Gauhati High Court. The whole matter started after he made controversial remarks on the wife of the Chief Minister of Assam. Also, the Assam High Court has considered this entire incident not as defamation but as a conspiracy. It has also been said that custodial interrogation should be done. After this order of the High Court, Pawan Kheda has reached the Supreme Court. In such a situation, the question is arising that if the Supreme Court also keeps the High Court’s decision permanent, then Pawan Kheda’s troubles may increase. Will be able to arrest them.

The matter came into controversy when Congress leader Pawan Kheda, in a press conference during the Assam election campaign, accused his wife of holding passports of three countries. On this, a case of forgery and defamation has been registered against him in Assam. The sword of arrest is hanging since his petition was rejected by the Gauhat High Court. Earlier, Telangana High Court had given him transit bail, which was stayed by the Supreme Court.

Congress leader Kheda had accused Sarma’s wife Riniki Bhuiyan Surma of allegedly having several foreign passports of UAE, Antigua and Barbuda-Egypt. Apart from this, it was also said by Kheda that he had two different properties in Dubai. Apart from this, it was alleged that there was assets worth Rs 52 thousand crore in the name of a firm named Riniki Bhuiyan Sarma Asset Collective LLC, registered in the state of Wyoming in the United States. On this, Assam CM Sarma and his wife have filed a case against him.

Party standing with Pawan Kheda
Here, Congress party has also supported Pawan Kheda. He has said that Congress leader will once again approach the Supreme Court demanding anticipatory bail for Pawan Kheda. Jairam Ramesh had given information about this through a post on social media.

Political uproar has started in Assam before the assembly elections. Congress leader Pawan Kheda had alleged that Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s wife has three passports, after which Assam Police has started action. Assam Police reached Pawan Kheda’s house in Delhi. However, Congress spokesperson was not found there, after which she took some belongings with her. Assam Police warned that they will find them from anywhere.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, ‘He fled from Guwahati yesterday. I have come to know through the media that the police had gone to his Delhi residence, but he has fled to Hyderabad. The law will take its course.

Congress furious over raid on Pawan Kheda’s house

Congress’s reaction has come to light regarding Assam Police’s raid on Pawan Kheda’s house. Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh said that deploying an entire army of police officers to arrest my colleague Pawan Kheda for asking basic questions in public interest proves that the Chief Minister of Assam is troubled, frustrated and scared.

The deployment of a full army of police officials to arrest my colleague Pawan Khera for asking basic questions in the public interest proves that the Assam CM is disturbed, desperate, and rattled.

This is not due process but instead a witch hunt, a bully using state machinery…

— Jairam Ramesh (@Jairam_Ramesh) April 7, 2026

He said that this is not a due process but a kind of vindictive action, by a bully who is using the state machinery to suppress the voice of the opposition, exposing his many dark deeds. People who bully are actually scared and have a lot to hide. This is also proof that the Chief Minister is facing imminent defeat.

Pawan Kheda had made these allegations

Congress spokesperson Pawan Kheda had asked in a press conference on April 5 how Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s wife has three different passports? Why does he need to hold three passports? Are they any criminals? Does Himanta Biswa Sarma have more than one passport? Is he preparing to run away after losing the Assam elections?

He said, ‘Himanta Biswa Sarma’s entire politics is based on hatred against Muslims, but his wife holds passports of two Muslim countries, how? According to Indian law, you cannot hold dual citizenship, so does Rinki Bhuyan Sarma also hold an Indian passport? Was the country’s Home Minister Amit Shah aware that his adopted son’s wife holds three passports? Home Minister Amit Shah should answer – will he set up a SIT and get this matter investigated?

29 January 2026… Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, ‘Trouble Mia Muslim in any way… If he faces trouble, he will leave Assam…’ There are only a few days left for the Assam assembly elections, in such a situation, this statement of CM Himanta seems to be working at the ground level. However, it started with delimitation in 2023. That means there were 34 Muslim dominated seats in the entire state, which had the power to overturn the results. The areas of those seats were changed, due to which now Muslims are left on only 20-22 seats. So will Muslim MLAs be eliminated in Assam? Let’s understand in the explainer…

Question 1: What is the current number of Muslim MLAs in Assam and will it decrease in 2026?
answer: The last assembly elections in India’s north-eastern state of Assam were held in 2021, in which a total of 31 Muslim MLAs were elected. Of these, 16 were from Congress and 15 were from All India United Democratic Front i.e. AIUDF. This number had the power to overturn the election results, but after just 5 years the situation changed.

Now the number of Muslim MLAs is expected to reduce to 22 in the elections to be held on April 9, 2026, because delimitation took place in Assam in 2023. If we understand in simple words, the scope or boundaries of 126 seats were changed. This will cause huge loss of votes to Muslim candidates. According to the 2011 census, the Muslim population in Assam is 34%, but the representation was already low and is going to decrease further. That means there is no big Muslim leader in Assam.

Question 2: What is delimitation and what happened to it in Assam?
answer: Due to delimitation in Assam, 126 assembly seats remained the same, but their boundaries were changed. The biggest impact was on Muslim dominated areas. Earlier 35 seats were in Muslim majority, now it has reduced to about 20. Hindu majority areas were added to many Muslim majority areas, due to which the influence of Muslim votes got scattered.

In Barpeta district, Muslim dominated 8 seats reduced to 6.

The 15 seats of Barak Valley were reduced to 13.

The seats of Goalpara West became reserved for ST, where earlier Muslim MLAs used to win.

Muslim areas like Janiya, Baghbar and Chenga were merged with Hindu majority areas.

Dhubri and Bilasipara, two Muslim dominated seats, were merged into one.

Experts are calling it ‘Gerrymandering’ (manipulation of seats). According to Al Jazeera’s report, Muslim votes were dispersed by combining 35 Muslim-dominated seats with Hindu-dominated areas. CPI(M) state secretary Suprakash Talukdar said, ‘Hindu areas were added to Muslim seats and Muslim voters were divided into Hindu-dominated areas.’

Question 3: What will be the effect of this change?
answer: Political expert Rashid Kidwai believes that the ‘political footprint’ of Muslim voters has reduced by about 30%. Earlier Muslims were decisive on 30-35 seats, now only on 20-22. Muslim representation was less than before, now it will decrease further. If Muslim MLAs are reduced to 22, their collective strength will further weaken.

For a long time, no strong, respected leader has emerged among the Muslims of Assam (especially those of Miyan or Bengali origin). AIUDF had leaders like Badruddin Ajmal till the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, but he lost his seat. Now there is neither any new face who can represent the entire community, nor are the parties supporting Muslim leaders.

Badruddin Ajmal lost the election from Dhubri Lok Sabha seat in 2024.

Rashid Kidwai said, ‘There are 31 Muslim MLAs, but they are limited to their respective constituencies. No collective voice is raised on major issues like displacement, pushback and deletion of names from the voter list. Muslim MLAs of Congress also remain silent because they fear that speaking out will reduce votes. outcome? The Muslim community is stuck in ‘political no-man’s land’.

Question 4: What is BJP’s strategy and fear of Miyan Muslims?
answer: CM Himanta Biswa Sarma has repeatedly said, ‘No need for Mia vote.’ That means BJP is openly opposing the Muslim population. CM Sarma also said, ‘Miya, harass Muslims in any way. If they are upset then they will leave Assam. In March 2026, in Barpeta, he had said, ‘Last time I broke some legs, this time I will break the spine.’

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma has given bitter statements against Muslims many times.

It is clear from this that this time BJP has not fielded a single Muslim candidate on 89 seats. BJP has put the burden of its ‘Muslim vote’ on its ally AGP. AGP has fielded 13 Muslim candidates on 26 seats. With this, BJP’s Hindutva image will remain intact. AGP spokesperson Kasturi Boruah said, ‘BJP is only against infiltrators and encroachment, not against Bengali Muslims.’

Whereas in 2021, Congress-AIUDF alliance had won 31 Muslim MLAs, but this time there is no alliance. Congress is dependent on Muslim votes but is silent on the issues. AIUDF is fighting alone, but its popularity has decreased. The chances of Muslim candidates are also decreasing due to division of opposition votes.

Question 5: So will the Muslim MLAs be wiped out from Assam?
answer: No, the card of Muslim MLAs from Assam will not be clean at all. Rashid Kidwai says, ‘In the 2026 elections, the number of Muslim MLAs is likely to reduce from 31 to around 20-23 or at most it can be 22. There is no possibility of it being completely eliminated (zero).

The grand road show organized in Jorhat city under the leadership of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma blocked the entire city for hours. A huge crowd of more than 15,000 people gathered in this huge road show from Dos & Co Chariyali to Baruah Chariyali, making it the biggest political event in recent times.

The road show was organized in support of BJP candidate Hitendra Nath Goswami, who is contesting against prominent Congress leader and Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi. As the Chief Minister’s convoy passed through various areas of the city, thousands of people came out of their homes and stood on the roadside to welcome him. The atmosphere had become completely festive. BJP workers and the public gave a warm welcome to the Chief Minister by showering flowers on him.

Addressed public meeting in Chariyali
Due to the crowd, traffic on many major routes of the city was completely affected and there was a jam situation for hours. However, BJP leaders have described this huge public support as a positive sign for the upcoming elections. After the road show, the Chief Minister addressed a public meeting at Nehru Park Chariyali.

Mention of proposed elevated corridor in Kaziranga
In his address, the CM expressed his gratitude to the people of Jorhat and said, “I thank the people of Jorhat. We are doing many development works here, which also includes drinking water project.” He also mentioned the proposed elevated corridor in Kaziranga, which will reduce the travel time between Jorhat and Guwahati by about an hour. He appealed to the people to take their decisions keeping development in mind.

The Chief Minister also expressed confidence about the election results and said that BJP can win 90 to 100 seats. At the end of his speech, when it started raining, he said, “When ‘Nar’ and ‘Narayan’ come together, success is certain.” This grand road show and huge public support has given new momentum to BJP’s election campaign in Jorhat, making the upcoming contest even more interesting.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while addressing his first public meeting in Gogamukh after the announcement of elections in Assam, expressed confidence of victory. He said that this immense love of the public is an open declaration that this time a hat-trick is certain. He further said that with the blessings of the public, he has got the opportunity to score a hat-trick of the post of Prime Minister and similarly the hat-trick of the government is certain in the state too.

Emphasis on connectivity with the region
The Prime Minister said that this area has special importance for him. He mentioned that Malini Than is not far from here, which is considered a holy city associated with Lord Shri Krishna. According to the programme, after PM Modi addresses the rally in Dhemaji’s Gogamukh, he is scheduled to address a public meeting in Vishwanath district at 1 pm.

Achievements of Housing Scheme
PM Modi said that till now, permanent houses have been provided to more than 22 lakh poor families. He said that it has been promised in the BJP’s resolution letter that the families who have not yet received the benefit of the Chief Minister Housing Scheme will also be given houses. Targeting Congress, PM Modi said that the party’s third defeat is certain. The ‘Prince’ of Congress will score a century of defeat. He praised the 10 years of good governance under the leadership of Sarbananda Sonowal and Himanta Vishwa Sharma.

future plans
He announced that in the coming time, there is a guarantee of providing permanent houses to 15 lakh more poor families. Along with this, he also described the scheme of providing free education to children of poor families as commendable.

Addressing the women, he said that under the ‘Lakhpati Didi’ campaign, more than three lakh women of Assam have become ‘Lakhpati Baidev’. He told that now the aim of NDA government is to make 40 lakh women ‘Lakhpati Baidev’. Apart from this, the ‘Orunodoi’ scheme will be expanded and additional benefits will also be added to it.

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday targeted Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, alleging that in this resource-rich state, ‘only one family is looting everything, while the common people have nothing.’

Vadra also alleged that the BJP-led government is working by intimidating people. Addressing an election rally in Nazira in support of opposition leader and party candidate Debabrata Saikia, Priyanka Gandhi launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Modi and accused him of working for America.

Only one family is looting in Assam: Priyanka Gandhi

Priyanka Gandhi claimed, ‘In Assam, one family is looting everything and when they are not looting, mines, lands and every property is handed over to big industrialists.’

He raised the issue of many old scams like Saradha, Smart City and NC Hills, alleging large-scale corruption in Assam. The Congress General Secretary claimed, ‘BJP had said that it has given a double engine government. Actually this is a government of double slavery. Prime Minister Modi is enslaved by America and Himanta Biswa Sarma is enslaved by Modi.

Wages of tea garden workers have not increased: Priyanka

Priyanka Gandhi claimed that this government has failed to fulfill the promise of increasing the daily wages of tea garden workers. He said that the people of the gardens are struggling. The Wayanad MP said, ‘People of various tribal communities have been demanding for years to be given Scheduled Tribe status. BJP had promised to give them Scheduled Tribe status, but they failed to do so.

She also alleged that women of Assam are forcibly forced to attend rallies of the Prime Minister and Chief Minister by threatening to remove their names from various government schemes, especially the flagship poverty alleviation scheme ‘Arunodaya’. Vadra said, ‘Prime Minister Modi and Chief Minister Himanta are ruling the country and the state by creating fear and on the strength of threats. Our fight is against this fear and to protect the culture and civilization of Assam.

Assam is in the clutches of mafia: Priyanka

Addressing his second election rally in Tingkhong in support of his party candidate Bipul Gogoi, the Congress general secretary said Assam has land, mines, history, nature, forests and every kind of other resources. Addressing the people present there, he said, ‘This land has given you everything, but still you people have nothing. Only one family is prosperous in Assam.

The Congress leader alleged that the state is in the clutches of ‘mafias and gangs’ and the government is working by threatening the people. He also said that popular musician Zubin Garg was the voice of Assam and he sang songs for brotherhood, unity and love. Garg died while swimming in Singapore in September last year.

Priyanka Gandhi said, ‘Assam government did not provide justice to her family. We want a government that will provide justice to Zubin Garg within 100 days. Voting for 126 seats of Assam Assembly will be held on April 9 and the results will be declared on May 4.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday (March 30) led a massive road show in Assam’s major city Dibrugarh, bringing the entire city to a standstill. In this event, which is being seen as a show of strength before the upcoming elections, thousands of people gathered on the streets and the entire city was seen colored in saffron.

This high-voltage campaign is considered to be a part of BJP’s strategic preparation, due to which the party once again demonstrated public support in its stronghold. Traffic almost came to a standstill in major areas of Dibrugarh as a large number of supporters, party workers and locals gathered on the roadside.

Prashant Phukan was also present with the CM
The road show started near the Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation office on AT Road, where the Chief Minister was greeting people riding on a specially decorated vehicle. At that time, Prashant Phukan was also present with him, who is a 4-time MLA and Energy Minister of the state. This time too he is BJP candidate from Dibrugarh. Both the leaders greeted the people by waving hands and smiling, while cheers and slogans echoed across the route.

The special feature of this road show was that at many places the local people presented traditional Assamese Gamosa to the Chief Minister. This not only reflects cultural affinity, but also highlights BJP’s strategy to connect with regional identity.

Dibrugarh is a strong stronghold of BJP
Analysts believe that this road show was not just a political event, but also an effort to strengthen connect with the public at the grassroots level. Dibrugarh is considered a strong bastion of BJP, where the balance of urban and rural voters is important from electoral point of view.

Emphasis on double engine government
During the road show, the Chief Minister focused the elections on the issues of development and stability. He mentioned the progress made in infrastructure, welfare schemes and administrative reforms in the state. He also stressed on the concept of double engine government, in which the coordination of Narendra Modi’s leadership at the Center and the state government is the basis of development.

He said, “The crowd gathered here today shows that the public trusts our work. Dibrugarh has always supported us and we will continue to take this journey of development forward.” He also appreciated Phukan’s long political experience and his contribution in the field.

This road show has taken place at a time when the election atmosphere is at its peak and all the political parties are putting in all their strength in the final phase. For BJP, Dibrugarh is an important seat in Upper Assam, where retaining its hold is an important part of the party’s strategy.
