The ongoing dispute within Mamata Banerjee’s party Trinamool Congress has reached the Election Commission. People from TMC rebel leader Ritabrata Banerjee’s group met the Election Commission on Thursday (July 2). Now, taking the matter seriously, the Election Commission has sent notices to both the groups. The Commission has sent a notice to Mamata Banerjee and Ritabrata Banerjee and has also sought a reply regarding this. The Election Commission has raised questions about the real TMC.

The Election Commission has written a letter to Mamta and Ritabrata group regarding the claims being made about TMC. Along with this, they have been asked to file their answers by 5:30 pm on Monday (July 6).

Rebel group met the Election Commission

The rebel group led by Ritabrata said that the full bench of the Election Commission listened to them patiently regarding its claim on the party. The rebel group expressed hope that the Commission will soon give an answer on this. Meanwhile, the Mamata Banerjee camp raised questions on the Commission’s decision to give time to the rebel group to meet and alleged that the meeting was a violation of the Commission’s own procedures.

Mamta faction questioned the Election Commission

The unrest in TMC started after the defeat in Bengal elections, which has not stopped till now. Mamta faction has raised the question after the leaders of the rebel group met the Election Commission. Mamta faction has said that the Election Commission has violated its own rules by taking this decision. Now it remains to be seen what decision the Election Commission takes regarding both the groups on July 6.

After losing power in West Bengal and the rebellion of 58 MLAs in the Assembly, Trinamool Congress (TMC) is now fighting to save its existence. Regarding this, Mamata Banerjee held a meeting with party MPs and MLAs at her residence in Kalighat. After the meeting, party MP Kalyan Banerjee said that Leader of Opposition (LoP) Ritabrata Banerjee appointed by the Speaker is illegal and the party will approach the High Court against it.

TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee said, ‘We have decided that the Leader of the Opposition (LOP) appointed by the Speaker is illegal. We will go to the High Court against this on Monday (8 June 2026). We will file a petition in the High Court. We will fight against the way BJP is killing TMC workers and filing false cases against them. We will fight on the streets, we will fight in the court.

Differences deepen over TMC’s successor

For almost 28 years, the internal system of Trinamool has been based on the same principle – the party and leader Mamata Banerjee are synonymous with each other. But now for the first time this equation is under serious challenge. The dissatisfaction that started within the party is now creating fear of spreading beyond the Assembly and reaching the MPs. Besides, deep differences are also emerging regarding leadership, succession and organizational control. The situation has reached such a stage that there is a possibility of future dispute over the control over the party’s symbol ‘Jora Ghas Phool’ (flowers and grass).

Ritabrata Banerjee claimed support of 60 MLAs

The proposal to nominate Ritabrata as the Leader of Opposition was supported by 58 Trinamool Congress MLAs, who signed the proposal and which was accepted by Speaker Rathindra Bose on Wednesday (June 3, 2026). Ritabrata Banerjee had claimed that he has the support of 60 MLAs and the number will increase in the coming days.

Abhishek Banerjee got Mamta’s support

After getting recognition as the Leader of Opposition, Ritabrata Banerjee had made it clear that Abhishek Banerjee would have no role in the party. He had said, ‘Our party has no relation with him. Our community also has no connection whatsoever with them. If there was a relationship, they would not have remained hidden for 26 days, but would have come out. He was beaten the way thieves are beaten. However, Abhishek Banerjee was also present in the meeting held at Mamata Banerjee’s house, when there was talk of going to the High Court against the LOP. This means that the core faction of the Trinamool Congress, which still owes its allegiance to former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her nephew and party general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, is now reduced to only 20 MLAs. The results of the assembly elections were declared on May 4, in which the Trinamool Congress had to face a crushing defeat. Before the counting of votes for the West Bengal Assembly elections, Trinamool Congress has received a big blow from the Supreme Court. The court has rejected the petition challenging the appointment of central government employees in counting of votes. The court has said that there is no need to give any order in this matter. The bench of Justice PS Narasimha and Justice Joymalya Bagchi said that the Election Commission’s decision is completely within the rules.

Both the judges were sitting specifically on Saturday to hear Trinamool’s petition. Senior lawyer Kapil Sibal, appearing for Trinamool Congress, accused the Election Commission of arbitrariness. But the bench did not accept it. He made it clear that the appointment of employees for counting of votes is the right of the Election Commission.

Justice Bagchi, chairman of the bench, said, “It is not written anywhere in the Election Commission’s circular that the employees will be from the Center only. But even if they had written so, we would not have called them wrong.” Justice Narasimha said that there will be CCTV cameras in the counting centre, there will be agents of political parties there. In such a situation, there is no basis for the apprehension of the petitioner.

What did the Election Commission lawyer say?

After this, senior lawyer DS Naidu started speaking on behalf of the Election Commission. Naidu said that the entire petition has been filed under baseless apprehensions. Nowhere in the Election Commission’s circular has it been said that state government employees will have no role in the counting of votes. Even the returning officer who appoints the counting staff is also an officer of the state government.

The commission’s lawyer said that the entire work is being done as per the rules. Everything written in the circular will be followed and the duties of the employees will be imposed on the same basis. After this the court said, “There is no need for any order in this matter. The Election Commission has said that the circular will be fully followed.”

High Court also rejected TMC’s arguments

Earlier, Trinamool Congress had filed the same petition in the Calcutta High Court. On April 30, the High Court had rejected his arguments. The High Court had said that the appointment of employees for counting of votes is the prerogative of the Election Commission. If there is any discrepancy in the counting of votes, a petition can be filed later. No order will be given merely on the basis of apprehensions.
