The first reaction of Trinamool Congress (TMC) has come on the counting of votes for West Bengal Assembly elections. TMC candidate Shashi Panja has alleged that papers were snatched from her and thrown away at the counting centre. He asked whether we have brought bullets and guns, have we come here to riot.

Counting of votes is going on for 293 assembly seats of West Bengal on Monday (May 4, 2026) and initial trends show a tough fight between Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and TMC. On the other hand, both the parties are very eager about the counting of votes and are looking quite active. TMC candidate from Shyampukur assembly seat Shashi Panja also reached the counting centre.

He alleged, ‘We had brought the paper with us to keep record of counting. This is the job of the Election Commission, but those papers were snatched from us and thrown away. Have we come here to riot? Have we brought ammunition and pistols? On the other hand, the Election Commission has also issued a statement on the thrown VVPAT paper slips. The Election Commission says that the VVPAT paper slips shown are related to the mock poll conducted before voting and not the actual election held on the day of voting. The Election Commission said that a detailed investigation has been initiated and a formal complaint has also been filed for verification and necessary action.

Shashi Panja also visited the strong room located at Netaji Indoor Stadium on Sunday and raised many serious questions. He said that many unusual incidents have come to light recently. During re-polling in South 24 Parganas district, large-scale transfers of officers have been made, including IPS officers.

Apart from this, he said, there has been heavy deployment of micro-observers, which is not usually seen at this level in elections. Many such steps are being seen for the first time in West Bengal. On the controversy over the strong room, he said that when the door of the strong room was opened two days ago, some unknown people were found inside. He raised questions as to who these people were, because no political party had information about them. Along with this, he also told that pink colored envelopes were present there, which are usually used for postal ballots.
