Pakistan Railways: Pakistan’s railway system is currently facing a serious financial crisis, where passenger and freight train services are somehow being run despite very limited resources. This situation is not only affecting the services, but is also raising serious concerns regarding the safety of passengers and employees.
According to the report of Pakistani newspaper Dawn, due to lack of resources, serious compromises are being made in maintenance and operations. Officials even say that due to lack of funds, important structures like train engines, coaches, wagons and railway tracks are getting damaged and the risk of accidents has also increased significantly.

The seriousness of this crisis of Pakistani Railways has come to the fore in several internal meetings, where the officials expressed their inability to perform their responsibilities properly. A senior officer of Lahore Division said that about 50 percent of the sanctioned posts in the division are vacant.

He also said that even small financial proposals like PKR (Pakistani Rupees) 500,000 have to go through a long bureaucratic process with the headquarters to get approval. This makes it difficult to take necessary action at the right time. Despite these challenges, railway employees are working under immense pressure to ensure that services continue as normal.
How did Pakistani Railways become like this??
In fact, this problem of Pakistan’s railway system is the result of long-standing structural and financial weaknesses, which have become more serious in the last 6–7 years and are expected to reach a critical level in the year 2026. Even the outgoing Chief Executive Officer (CEO) struggled to keep the system running and pay salaries on time, highlighting the depth of its institutional troubles.
Removing parts from one coach and fixing another
According to Dawn’s report, the condition is so bad that the employees had to remove parts from one coach and repair another. All eight divisions of Pakistan Railways – Lahore, Karachi, Multan, Sukkur, Quetta, Rawalpindi, Peshawar and Workshop Division – are facing similar problems. Officials have warned that in the current circumstances it is becoming increasingly difficult to achieve operational and revenue targets.
