Education ministers have played an important role in giving direction to India’s education system. Since independence, many big leaders have handled this responsibility. The first education minister of independent India was Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. He held the responsibility of this post from 1947 to 1958. Azad was not only a freedom fighter and a great thinker, but is also considered a strong supporter of education reforms. During his tenure, a strong foundation of the modern education system in the country was laid.

Murli Manohar Joshi and Karan Singh did doctorate

Former Union Education Minister Dr. Murli Manohar Joshi is counted among the most educated leaders of the country. He obtained B.Sc. degree from Meerut College. After this, M.Sc. in Physics and D.Phil in Spectroscopy from Allahabad University. Earned the degree of (D.Phil.). Before joining politics, he also worked as an educationist and scientist.

Former Union Education Minister Dr. Karan Singh has also been very influential. He received his primary education from Doon School, Dehradun. After this he obtained Bachelor’s (BA) degree from Jammu and Kashmir University. For higher education he went to Delhi University, from where he obtained M.A. in Political Science. (MA) and later obtained the degree of Ph.D.

Pratap Chandra Chandra

Pratap Chandra Chander served as the Education Minister in the Morarji Desai government between 1977 and 1979. His academic achievements were also quite impressive. He did B.A. in History from Calcutta University. (Hons.), L.L.B. and D.Phil. in Arts. (D.Phil.) degree. He is also credited with implementing the 10+2+3 system in the Indian education system.

M.C. Chagla

M.C. Chagla was the country’s Education Minister from 1963 to 1966. He is counted among the jurists and scholars of the country. He received his education from St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai and went to Lincoln College, Oxford University for further studies. His contribution to law, education and public life is considered remarkable.

Humayun Kabir

Humayun Kabir had taken charge of the Education Ministry for some time in the year 1963. He was a famous educationist, writer and philosopher. He received higher education from Calcutta University and Exeter College, Oxford University. His contribution in the field of literature, education and social thinking is still remembered.

Dharmendra Pradhan

Current Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan is also included among the highly educated leaders. He has obtained Master’s degree in Anthropology from Utkal University. During his tenure, special emphasis has been laid on areas like New Education Policy (NEP 2020), digital education and skill development.
