Venezuela Earthquake: Two consecutive powerful earthquakes caused huge devastation in the Latin American country Venezuela in the early hours of Thursday (Indian time). Buildings collapsed in many areas including the capital Caracas, people were trapped under debris and there were reports of massive damage. According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), this is one of the most powerful earthquakes to hit Venezuela in the last 100 years. In the initial assessment, there is a possibility of death of 10 thousand to 1 lakh people.

- A few seconds after the first earthquake, a second and more powerful earthquake occurred.
- The intensity of the second earthquake was recorded at 7.5.
- Its epicenter was near the Montalban area, located about 100 miles west of Caracas.
Tsunami alert immediately after earthquake
Following the earthquake, the US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami warning for coastal areas of Puerto Rico, the US and British Virgin Islands, Aruba, Curaçao and Bonaire. However, after assessing the situation after about an hour, this warning was withdrawn.

By nightfall, reports of collapse of several buildings came from the Altamira and Chacao areas of the capital Caracas. The rescue team immediately started relief and rescue operations. At least 18 people were pulled out alive from the Chakao area.

Acting President Delsey Rodriguez, in an address to the nation, said the government was monitoring the situation. He talked about declaring emergency and seeking international assistance.

The US Geological Survey said in its initial assessment that there is a possibility of massive loss of life and massive destruction. According to the agency, the number of dead can reach from 10 thousand to 1 lakh. However, the total number of deaths and injured has not been released officially yet.
Air services and schools affected
Myketia International Airport was closed as a precautionary measure. Holiday was declared in many schools. However, no major damage to oil production and energy infrastructure has been confirmed yet.
