Walnut is considered a high value crop. It has many benefits. There is a continuous good demand for it in the market. It can be preserved for a long time. It is easily sold both in the country and abroad. Being a dry fruit, it is sold at an expensive price. It is also used in medicine and food industry. For these reasons, walnut farming is considered a profitable business.

How much can one earn from a tree?

The price of walnuts in the market ranges from Rs 400 to Rs 700 per kg. In some places it is sold at an even higher price. One tree can yield about 40 to 70 kg of produce, which means one can earn around Rs 25,000 to 28,000 from one tree. If 20 trees are planted, the income can be Rs 5 to 6 lakh. In this way, this farming can prove to be very beneficial for the farmers in the long run.

How should farmers cultivate walnuts?

1. Preparation of seedlings – Walnut saplings are not planted directly in the field. First they are prepared in the nursery. For this the grafting method is used.

2. Time of planting – The time from December to January is considered best for walnut cultivation. At this time plants are planted in the fields.

3. Fertilizer and care – Rotten cow dung manure is used for walnut cultivation. In which balanced quantity of nitrogen, phosphorus and potash is given per tree. Also, regular irrigation and care is necessary.

What should be the climate and soil for walnut cultivation?

For walnut cultivation, such weather and soil is necessary which helps in good growth of the plant. This crop can grow in both cold and mild warm environments and can tolerate temperatures ranging from 5 degrees to 35 degrees Celsius, but the best temperature for it is considered to be 20 to 25 degrees. The best yield is obtained in loamy soil, because moisture and nutrients remain balanced in it. Apart from this, the pH level of soil should be between 5 to 7. Also, it is important to have good drainage arrangements in the field, because stagnation of water can cause damage to the plants. Cultivating walnuts in sandy, very hard or highly alkaline soil is not considered appropriate.

How long does it take for a walnut plant to bear fruit?

Walnut plant does not produce immediately after planting, rather it takes about 4 years to produce fruits. In the initial years, the tree gives limited quantity of fruits, but as it develops, its yield also starts increasing. Good and stable yields usually occur between 7 and 10 years, when the tree becomes fully mature. Walnut tree keeps producing continuously for a long time, about 25 to 30 years. During this period, production not only remains stable over time, but in many cases also increases, due to which farmers continue to get good profits for a long time.
