West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026: Voting for the first phase of assembly elections is going to be held in West Bengal on Thursday this week (April 23, 2026), but before the elections, political activity has increased significantly in Bengal due to allegations and counter-allegations by political parties. In this series, Congress National President and Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge has made a scathing attack on the state’s ruling party Trinamool Congress (TMC) and opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on the issue of youth and employment in Bengal.
He said that the youth of West Bengal are suffering the loss of the fight between TMC and BJP. The youth here are forced to leave their homes and go to other states for employment, for which Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee are responsible.

Modi at the center and Mamata in the state are responsible for the condition of Bengal: Kharge
Addressing an election rally in Siliguri, West Bengal on Monday (April 20, 2026), Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said, ‘The youth of West Bengal have become weak due to the feud between TMC and BJP. They are not getting jobs. They are going to cities like Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Pune in search of jobs.
Targeting PM Modi and CM Mamata Banerjee, he said that if their government is good then why are the youth of Bengal forced to leave their homes? He said, ‘If PM Modi wants the well-being of Bengal then why do the children here work outside in hotels. They go out and do small jobs. If anyone has maintained this condition of the youth of Bengal, it is PM Modi at the Center and Mamata Banerjee in the state.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said, ‘West Bengal was earlier a very progressive state of the country. A lot of development was taking place in Bengal. There were big factories here. The country’s first IIT came to Kolkata, the first IIM came to Kolkata. Earlier every scheme of the country used to come in this state, but now the fight between BJP and TMC has ruined West Bengal.
