West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026: The Election Commission of India (ECI) and the police administration have taken major action against attempts to intimidate and influence voters before the assembly elections in West Bengal. Bidhannagar police arrested former Trinamool Congress (TMC) councilor Nirmal Dutta on Wednesday (April 15, 2026) on charges of allegedly intimidating, threatening and influencing voters in Bidhannagar area.
Actually, this action against the former TMC councilor has been taken after the complaint of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Sharadwat Mukherjee from Bidhannagar assembly seat. According to news agency IANS, BJP candidate Sharadwat Mukherjee had approached the Election Commission on Tuesday (April 14, 2026) with these allegations against Nirmal Dutta. He also met Bidhannagar Police Commissioner in this regard and lodged a complaint against Dutta. After this, on the basis of the complaint, the Trinamool Congress leader was arrested. Let us tell you that Nirmal Dutta’s wife is the current councilor of Trinamool Congress (TMC) from ward number 38 of Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation.
Tried to threaten people in public meeting
According to the report, former TMC councilor Nirmal Dutta was heard saying in a meeting, ‘We will know who the people of Duttabad area are and where they vote, we have Aadhaar cards and voter cards of all of them.’ This controversy started after Nirmal Dutta made this statement in a meeting held in Salt Lake on Monday (April 13, 2026), on which the BJP candidate lodged a complaint with the Election Commission and the police.
Arrested within 24 hours, court sent him to 10 days custody
Trinamool Congress leader Nirmal Dutta was arrested within 24 hours of the complaint over allegations of threatening people at a public meeting. After this, he was presented in Bidhannagar court on Wednesday (April 15, 2026). After hearing the case, the court has ordered to send the accused Nirmal Dutta to judicial custody for 10 days.
