Will the number of IPL matches increase from 2027? Bilateral series may be reduced, Chairman gave a big statement

The 19th edition of the Indian Premier League is going on, 6 matches have been played and today is the 7th match between Chennai Super Kings and Punjab Kings. There are 10 teams playing this season, between which a total of 74 matches will be played. But the number of matches may increase from 2027 onwards. IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal said that extending the IPL window can be considered.

When 8 teams played in IPL, each team played 2-2 matches against each other team. Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans are playing from 2022, the total number of teams has increased to 10 and now every team is not able to play 2-2 matches with all the teams in the league stage. Arun Dhumal believes that due to the busy cricket calendar, there is not enough space to increase the number of matches from 74 to 94. They do not find it practical to increase the number of double headers. However, he admitted that the IPL window can be extended in future. The reason behind this he said was people’s less interest in some series.

Arun Dhumal said in an interview to The Financial Times that for some time now it has been seen that people’s interest in bilateral series has decreased. For this reason, big countries like England, Australia, West Indies and South Africa came up with their own T20 leagues. According to him, if this continues then every country will focus only on those bilateral series which will benefit them economically. Only in this situation the IPL window can be extended.

The IPL chairman expressed hope that there will be positive talks with other countries and after 2027, a bigger window will be created for more than 74 matches. He said that (Board of Control for Cricket in India) BCCI’s focus is not only on Indian cricket but also on the betterment of world cricket.
