Virat Kohli retired from Test cricket on 12 May 2025. This was a very shocking decision, because no one had expected retirement. The condition of the Test team after Kohli’s retirement can be gauged from the points table of WTC 2025-27. There is very little hope of Team India going to the World Test Championship final and it is currently in sixth place.
For the last one year, there have been continuous rumors of Virat Kohli’s return to Test. This time there has been no rumor but Virat’s childhood coach Rajkumar Sharma has given a big hint about the retirement U-turn.
Coach gave a big hint
During a discussion on a podcast, Virat Kohli’s childhood coach Rajkumar Sharma said, “Many of Virat’s hardcore fans have told me, ‘Sir, talk to Virat about returning to Test cricket, because Virat listens to you.’ On convincing Virat Kohli to return to Test cricket, coach Rajkumar further said, “Talks have taken place, let’s see what happens?”
Virat Kohli has scored 9230 runs in his 123-match Test career, in which he has 30 centuries and 31 fifties. Virat is the fourth highest run scorer for India in Tests after Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Sunil Gavaskar.
Kohli is the most successful Test captain
Virat Kohli has been the most successful captain of the Indian team in Test cricket. In terms of win percentage as a captain, Virat has left behind even legends like Sourav Ganguly and Sunil Gavaskar. Under the captaincy of Virat, Team India played 68 test matches, in which it won on 40 occasions. As Test captain, Virat’s winning percentage was 70.17.
