Dr Shruti Kotangale, consultant gynecologist, told TOI that the effects of heat are not limited to just breathing or urine-related problems, but it can also affect periods. Lack of water in the body and increasing temperature can bring hormonal changes. Actually, when the temperature increases, the body works harder to keep itself cool. In this process, hormones like estrogen and progesterone, which control periods, can be affected.

Many women feel a change in flow during summer. Some months the bleeding may be heavy, and sometimes it may be very light. The reason for this is lack of water in the body and change in blood circulation. Dehydration can cause blood to thicken, while heat stress affects uterine contractions. Dr. Kotangale says that its effect is different for every woman, so change in flow is normal.

Dehydration and depression

Water shortage and stress also play a big role in this entire process. In summer, the body gets dehydrated quickly, which can increase cramps. This is the reason why many women feel more tired and emotional ups and downs during their periods in this season.

Heat also affects sleep. If sleep is not proper then the hormonal balance worsens. It works like a cycle in that heat affects sleep, sleep hormones and hormones affect periods. Extreme heat can also increase PMS symptoms, such as headache, vomiting, body aches and restlessness. However, it is not necessary that every woman feels these changes.

What things should be kept in mind

During this time, the most important thing is to adopt the right routine. It is very important to drink enough water, at least 3-4 liters a day. Fruits like watermelon, cucumber and traditional drinks like coconut water, buttermilk help in keeping the body hydrated. Light food, less caffeine and regular sleep also keep the body balanced. Light exercise or yoga can also provide relief.
