Studying in top universities abroad is the dream of millions of Indian students, but high fees and living expenses become a big challenge for many talented students. To help such students, the Government of India operates the National Overseas Scholarship (NOS) Scheme. Under this scheme, eligible students are provided financial assistance for pursuing Master’s degree and PhD studies abroad.
National Overseas Scholarship is an important scheme of the Central Government, the objective of which is to provide economically weaker but bright students an opportunity to get world class education. Through this scheme, students can pursue higher education in the world’s top and recognized foreign universities.
This scholarship is exclusively available to students belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), DNT, landless agricultural laborers and traditional artisan families. The government aims to provide students of these categories access to international level education and give a new direction to their careers.
Under scholarship, the government bears almost the entire expenses related to the education of the students. This includes university tuition fees, annual maintenance allowance for board and lodging, medical insurance, visa fees and round-trip economy class airfare. Thus, there is no financial burden on students and their families and they can concentrate completely on their studies.
What is the necessary eligibility?
Some eligibility conditions have also been prescribed to avail the benefits of the scheme. The annual income of the family of applicants belonging to Scheduled Caste, DNT, landless agricultural laborer and traditional artisan category should be less than Rs 8 lakh. Whereas for Scheduled Tribe (ST) category students, this income limit has been fixed at Rs 6 lakh per year.

Apart from this, the age of the applicant should be less than 35 years at the time of application. The most important condition is that the student must have received an unconditional admission offer to a Master’s or PhD program from a recognized foreign university. Generally, preference is given to students seeking admission in universities with good rankings globally.
Where can you apply?
The application process for National Overseas Scholarships is conducted through the respective ministries. Students belonging to Scheduled Caste, DNT and Landless Agricultural Laborer categories can apply on the National Overseas Scholarship Portal of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (MSJE).
