A study by MD Anderson Cancer Center in Texas and the University of Florida looked at data from more than 1,000 patients who had severe lung cancer or melanoma. Research found that patients who took an mRNA Covid vaccine (such as Pfizer or Moderna) within 100 days of starting immunotherapy had twice the survival rate of those without the vaccine.

The results of this study were presented at the 2025 European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) conference and published in the journal Nature. Researchers say that mRNA vaccine activates the immune system in the body, making it easier to eliminate cancer cells. This vaccine increases interferons and other immune molecules, which increase PD-L1 protein in tumors. With this, the immune system is able to easily identify and destroy cancer cells.
