‘The responsibility of Bar and Bench is equal, lawyers should understand the pain of the poor…’, upcoming CJI Surya Kant gave a big message.


Incoming Chief Justice of India Surya Kant called on members of the legal fraternity to be sympathetic towards those seeking justice and emphasized that both the bar and the bench have equal responsibility in the administration of justice.

Bar is the first step to get justice: Justice Surya Kant
While addressing as the chief guest at the 125th Foundation Day function of Avadh Bar Association organized in the auditorium of the High Court located at Gomti Nagar, Justice Surya Kant said that the first step to get justice for the weak and poor people is the Bar. He said, ‘Whoever comes to the court in the hope of justice, he first approaches the lawyer. Therefore the Bar should understand the pain of the poor. The Bar and the Bench have equal responsibility in the administration of justice.

Challenges of justice system in the era of AI
Referring to the changing times and new technological challenges, Justice Surya Kant said, ‘The era of AI has arrived, the country is progressing economically. In such a situation, the number of commercial cases will increase, for which we will have to be prepared. He described India’s judicial system as one of the best judicial systems in the world. Recalling his days as a lawyer, he said that he had received invaluable guidance from the senior members of the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court. He described the relationship between the Bar and the Bench as an unbreakable one.

Role and responsibilities of lawyers
Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court Justice Arun Bhansali said, ‘White shirt, black coat and gown are not just a uniform, but a belief.’ He urged the lawyers to explain the legal proceedings in simple language so that the client can understand it easily. Delhi High Court Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyay said the legacy of the Awadh Bar has been glorious, having given the state two chief ministers, Shripat Mishra and C.P. Gave Gupta. He also said that a member of the Awadh Bar became the first Attorney General of Pakistan and his son later became the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Pakistan.

Providing justice is the priority of lawyers: Judge
Justice Rajan Rai, senior judge of the Lucknow bench, said that the members of the bar should listen to the voice of the poor section and providing justice in the legal profession should be their first priority. Justice Mahesh Chandra Tripathi said, ‘A strong bar is the hallmark of a strong judiciary.’ The program was organized by Awadh Bar Association President S. Chandra and general secretary L.K. Tiwari also addressed.
