How powerful was America’s atomic bomb?
The US tested a strategic nuclear bomb called B61-12 at the Tonopah Test Range in Nevada in August 2025, but it was not as thorough as nuclear tests usually are. According to Sandia National Laboratories and the US National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), the bomb tested was inert, meaning it did not contain a nuclear explosive warhead.
How was the bomb dropped?
The test took place between August 19 and August 21 and used the F-35A fighter aircraft. These aircraft carried and dropped the B61-12 bomb to see how the bomb would behave in a real mission situation. This is a milestone in American history. The test proved that not only the aircraft itself, but also the crew and weapons are reliable, meaning everything is technically mission-ready.
These bombs do not have nuclear warhead
Interestingly, this test was conducted with joint test assemblies, which resemble real bombs but do not contain any nuclear warhead. In late 2024, the NNSA completed a life extension program for the B61-12 bomb, extending its service life by approximately 20 years. This step points to a new chapter in America’s nuclear strategy. The B61-12 can now also be carried on fighter aircraft (such as the F-35) that are capable of stealth intelligence and modern warfare techniques.
Effective as a tactical nuclear option
With this, this weapon can become more effective as a tactical nuclear option, that is, nuclear power can be used in a more efficient manner in times of need. But the nature of this test has raised concerns among many countries and experts. On the one hand, this demonstration shows America’s capability and determination, on the other hand it also raises questions of nuclear warning, nuclear proliferation and strategic instability.
