A tragic railway accident has occurred in the south-western region of China, in which 11 maintenance workers working on the railway track died and two people were injured. The incident occurred early on Thursday at Luoyangzhen station in Kunming, the capital of Yunnan province.
How did the accident happen?
According to state media reports, the train was passing on the track during testing of seismic equipment. Meanwhile, the train turned on a curved track and hit the employees present there. The accident was so severe that many employees died on the spot.
Rescue operation started immediately
After the accident, the railway administration immediately activated the emergency system. Local administration and medical team reached the spot and the injured were admitted to the hospital. According to officials, treatment of the injured employees is ongoing and their condition is being monitored.
According to government news agency Xinhua, a detailed investigation has been started to find out the cause of the accident. It is not yet clear whether this was a human error or a technical flaw. According to reports, rail operations at the station have now become normal and services are running smoothly again.
China’s rail network
China claims to have the largest railway network in the world, covering an area of more than 160,000 kilometres. However, several disastrous train accidents have occurred here in recent years. There have been very few fatal incidents in recent decades. In 2011, an accident in Zhejiang province killed 40 people and injured 200. Another fatality occurred in Gansu province in 2021, when nine workers died after being hit by a train on the Lanzhou-Xinjiang railway.
