That is, from 1 February to 31 July, this island remains under the control of Spain and the citizens there become residents or citizens of Spain. Exactly 6 months later, from 1 August to 31 January, this island is ruled by France and the citizens living here become residents of France. This is a unique arrangement in itself and there is no military conflict of any kind between these two countries during the exchange every 6 months.
350 years old agreement
The tradition of exchange and governance of “Fangant Island” between Spain and France every 6 months has been going on for about 350 years, which reflects mutual peace and brotherhood between the two countries. This agreement between the two countries was made in the year 1659, under which it was decided that this island would be ruled by both the countries for 6 months each. This means that in a year there will be 6 months of Spain’s rule and the remaining 6 months of France’s rule. This agreement is known as the Pyrenees Treaty.
Island in danger of extinction
The area of the island with this unique settlement is quite small. It is a small island, whose length is about 200 meters and width is about 40 meters. But this island is gradually sinking into the river, due to which its existence is in danger. This situation remains a matter of great concern for both Spain and France.
