Former MP and senior Congress leader Suresh Kalmadi has said goodbye to the world at the age of 82. He died in Pune, Maharashtra. The mortal remains of Suresh Kalmadi will be kept at home for cremation till 2.00 pm on Tuesday, January 6. The funeral will take place in the evening.

Suresh Kalmadi was suffering from a long illness.

Suresh Kalmadi, former MP from Pune, Maharashtra and former Minister of State in the Railway Ministry, breathed his last at around 3:30 am on Tuesday, January 6. He was fighting a long illness. His mortal remains will be kept for last darshan at Kalmadi House in Erandwane, Pune till 2.00 pm. The last rites will be performed at Vaikuntha crematorium in Navi Peth, Pune at 3:30 pm.

Name was associated with Commonwealth Games

Suresh Kalmadi’s name is mainly associated with the organization of 2010 Commonwealth Games. He was accused of large-scale corruption, fraud and financial irregularities in the management of events and allocation of contracts. Due to this he was arrested. Additionally, he was prosecuted for criminal conspiracy.

Suresh Kalmadi was not active in politics

The political journey of Congress leader Suresh Kalmadi was very long and successful. However, at present he was not active in politics. Apart from politics, Suresh Kalmadi was very active as a sports administrator. He was the President of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) for a long time.

Suresh Kalmadi was born in 1944 on 1 May. He is married to S. Meera Kalmadi. He has two sons and a daughter. Suresh Kalmadi became a Rajya Sabha member in the year 1982. In 1995, he got the responsibility of Minister of State in the Central Government. He has been MP from Pune Lok Sabha constituency several times. Suresh Kalmadi was a former pilot of the Indian Air Force and later became active in politics.
