On the occasion of National Youth Day, when the role of youth, their future and their direction is being discussed across the country, then Belur Math located in Howrah, West Bengal seems to present a different example. This is the same holy place which was established by Swami Vivekananda. Even today, work is being done to connect the youth with their ideals, ideas and life values.
The most special thing about Belur Math is that here only the youth are made monks. According to the rules of the Math, to become a Sanyasi, the age must be below 28 years and it is mandatory for the candidate to be a graduate. The Math believes that the resolution taken at a young age forms a strong foundation for the society and the country throughout life.
Swami Vivekananda’s thoughts are still relevant today
Swami Shukdevanand, Secretary of the Math’s Shardapeeth, says that no matter how much time changes, how much technology advances, Swami Vivekananda’s thoughts never become old. He says that today’s world may be living in the era of Artificial Intelligence and social media, but Vivekananda’s ideals are still working to give the right direction to the youth.
According to him, the glamor of social media can distract the attention of the youth, but Vivekananda’s thoughts show them the path of self-confidence, service and discipline. The youth coming to Belur Math try to imbibe these values in their lives.
Youth conferences being held across the country
Belur Math is not only a religious place, but it is also a major center for youth development. Swami Balabhadranand, Assistant General Secretary of the Math, says that about 300 youth conferences are organized every year under the Institute of Culture of Ramakrishna Mission. In these conferences the youth understand the importance of Swami Vivekananda’s life, his thoughts and social service.
Apart from this, youth cells are active at about 290 centers of Ramakrishna Mission across the country, where value based education is given to the youth daily. Here, along with studies, emphasis is also given on character building, discipline and spirit of service.
Youth also come from abroad
The identity of Belur Math is not limited to India only. People and youth from abroad also come here, who want to take inspiration from the thoughts of Swami Vivekananda. Swami Shukdevanand tells that Swami Vivekananda had spent many years here. His room is still safe in the monastery premises and his Mahasamadhi is also located here.
This place is open to people of all religions. Every person who comes here experiences peace, service and introspection. This is why Belur Math is seen as a spiritual and cultural confluence. Ko
