India has once again slammed Pakistan in the United Nations on the issue of Kashmir. India’s UN Mission Counselor Aldos Punos said that Pakistan is misusing the concept of self-determination to attack democratic and pluralistic countries by lying on the issue of Kashmir.
Aldos Poonos said in the General Assembly on Thursday (January 15, 2026), ‘At a time when member states need to rise above their small-mindedness, Pakistan is misusing all platforms and processes to carry out its divisive agenda in the UN.’
He said, ‘The right to decide for oneself is a fundamental principle included in the UN Charter. However, this right should not be misused to promote separatism among different thinking and democratic countries. The Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir is an important and inseparable part of India.
The assembly was discussing Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ report on the UN’s work last year. During this, Pakistan’s permanent representative Asim Iftikhar Ahmed mentioned Kashmir. Now, whatever may be the issue of discussion in the Assembly, Pakistan always keeps singing the praises of Kashmir. Even if other members ignore Pakistan’s old tune on the issue of Kashmir, it still keeps repeating the same thing.
Aldos Punos said, ‘This forum is no different, and Pakistan has unnecessarily mentioned the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, which is an essential and inalienable part of India. Although Pakistan has got used to it, it would be better if it does not resort to baseless allegations and lies and does not show a picture which is completely different from the reality.
Ahmed talked about self-determination for the Palestinian people and during this he also mentioned Kashmir. He talked about respecting UN resolutions. UN Security Council Resolution 47, adopted on April 21, 1948, demands that Pakistan withdraw its troops and infiltrators from the entire Kashmir.
India says that the referendum in Kashmir is now meaningless because the people of Kashmir have made their loyalty to India clear by taking part in the elections and electing the leaders of the region. Ahmed reiterated Pakistan’s opposition to increasing the permanent membership of the UN Security Council. The biggest reason for this is simply enmity with India. However, most of the UN members, especially African countries, do not agree with Pakistan on this issue.
